XP problem

A friend of mine is running XP home ed and the computer wont remember any of his preferences ie desktop wallpaper when he puts a shortcut on the desktop it disappears after he restarts..... and when he puts stuff in the recycle bin it becomes undeleted when the comp is back on...what should he do? reinstall the OS or is there some sort of option turned on to erase that

1st Solution -Your friend needs to re-install windows. When the software was installed there was an error on the profile setup and the data saved is going to the wrong location.
2nd possible solution - There are security protocols somewhere on the system not allowing you to make personal changes, but I highly doubt it since home edition is being used, but it is possible
