here is what i did. put 2 network cards in one computer (the server) [1 card gets my cable modemn, the other goes to hub], then the rest plug into the hub. cheap, works, dont have to pay extra fee from cox cable (grrr.)
on my cousin's network that i set-up, he got a router, plug everythign straight into the router. cable modemn, 3 computers, viola.
Dont plan on actually being able to do much of anything with those Linksys or Netgear routers. If you really want something that you can configure exactly how you want you need to use Linux and set that up as a router/webserver/whatever. But, that all depends on your Linux skills and whether you care or not. I had a Netgear Router with a Switch built in and everything but it constantly blocked my ports and one day quit working.

I'm running an 8 port linksy router/hub at home for 5 systems on a cable modem. For simple networking this will do the trick.
yep, the $50 hubs are the quick and easy way. the server deal mentioned by cambo is the most flexible solution, but it takes a lot more time and knowhow, which some people may not have.
