I just bought a Dell Inspiron 5100 Notebook. Here are the specs:
2.4 Ghz P4
512 DDR SDRAM
40 gig HD
24X CD-RW/DVD
Floppy
15" display
32 Radeon 7500 VC
internal Ethernet
Internal 56k
docking station
carrying case
XP Professional
XP Office Professional
Decent intergrated Sound Card (equivelent to SB Live)
Next on the list:
a DSL hub so i can split up my DSL to my other 3 computers and the DELL 17" digital Flat screen (DVI)
This computer is perfect for me since it is a all in one computer, DVD for travel, fast and big for web developement, perfect for just picking it up and taking to clients to show works in progress using IIS, small and practical but the same as most towers out there. The only draw back is the 40 gig hard drive. I want 80... maybe i will upgrade later.
well that is all just felt like sharing!
Later all

We have a inpiron 8000 and we love it. We are now looking into getting a 600m or a d800 from dell. I think we will get the d800 because it has the 15.4 wide screen and it is a centrino.
Nj - why are you going to pay more for light weight or .4" of screen. Get a sony Vaio for like $400 or more less which has a 16" screen and is thinner and lighter then the D800. It is also made for personal use like DVDs, MP3, MOV, etc. Unless you are running a company or sales from your laptop. Like me! You are about to pay way to much for a laptop. Especially for .4". Just a suggestion
Well my wife is going to use it for work (vpn from home and road trips)also for personal stuff.I heard that Sony's tech support sucks big time, but I will check into there system. Thanks for the tip :-)
NJ- If you need tech support call me. Computers are easy especially now a days.
your doing Virtual private networks? get win 2000 or XP professional, but you already new that. I prefer 2000 but I already own it and if i don't like XP i will just replace it.
What do you guys do. I have my own web consulting and ecommerce implimentation and design company with a graphics department. My partner does allthat backend stuff like programming, servers, VPN, blah, blah, blah. I just consult and design. Lots of fun. Plus this laptop matches my company colors. oh which reminds me I have to update my site!
anyway good luck on the future addition to your family
My wife is a manager for Cox Communications Business unit. Thanks for the tech support offer. I still think we will go with the Dell I want that new intel m cpu for the battery life and its speed is better than a p4m@2.4GHz. Also, the Dell has the biggest screen size with that cpu. The Sony screen with that cpu was only 14"
Oh and before you guys hang me for the faster than a p4m statement. I got that from the intel site and i am going to post the link for all my friends Pm vs. P4m
once there click on the "compare performance" bottom right.
yeah i wanted the M chip but it just cost to much and you got to remember speed is only significantly noticable after 250hz. and speed is only really necessary for servers, rendering, graphic acceleration. hardrive speed as well. our 7200 rpm HD are worthless for servers, 10K baby! But yeah, the longer battery life is a definite plus. but my meetings last no more then 2hrs and i always have a outlet available. Although for flight i may get the bigger battery. got to have DVDs Dell is better i agree. But i am a money junky. So i just bought a docking station for $168 to attach my 17" monitor to for home use. hehe also i am getting a matrox 80GB external USB hard drive for personal storage so i can use my laptop as a all in one machine. Well once again good luck on you puter. And good luck to your Wife. Cox sux around here! hehe. Comcast all the way!!! but they suck too.
i think that was a bit much for a computer, even if it is a laptop. i got my athalon XP 2000, 1G pc133 SDRAM, nvidia gforce4 ti4200 video, digital 5.1 surround sound on board and the tower for a mear $300. i'm still using my dinky 10 gig drive till i can afford my nice 120 gig 7200 RPM special edition 8 mb buffer western digital drive. it's only $100 at fry's right now, but i'm dirt poor.
anyways, yes, sony support for any products, espically computers, does suck a big one. what kind of warranty and service do you have for that $2300?
