Re: hard drive crash help

hmm i guess its also worth mentioning that before this happened, i would hear the fan noise changing like it was spinning slower and then faster almost like too much power was getting used up. ive been running this setup tho for almost 10 yrs without problem. its just one of those things. i played around here and there with settings but everything looks normal. i even had my old bios settings written down to compare to. i ended up just pulling the drive and ata card out for the time being and everything runs great again. i still need to at least get a usb drive to keep a second backup. Re: hard drive crash help

Fan speed fluctuation and boot issues? Power supply. She's giving her all she's got but she ain't got as much as she used to have. Pick up a cheapie 300-watt 20-pin ATX power supply on Ebay and that will probably fix it.

Re: hard drive crash help

As long as (what I assume back then used) the 20 pin connector and other connectors were hooked properly it should work. In theory a 1200w 2009 PSU should work on a 1996 computer provided the power harness's are the same.

I agree. They make them all universal now unless you buy a Dell, or Compaq... GRRR I HATE THEM SO MUCH.

Re: hard drive crash help

honestly, everything on here is missing one key: motherboard. this sounds like a motherboard issue. one easy way to check without spending more money... open the case and look at the capacitors on the board... are they bulging? leaking? corroded? most likely cause. a power supply will either work or not work. ram is also not likely with the symptoms you described. windows can easily detect a hardware malfunction except when it comes to the central nervous system... and a hard drive rarely causes hang-ups like that. motherboard man...

Re: hard drive crash help

i dont like what youre saying. that means new computer time which i really dont want. everythings running so smoothly and i have too many programs and hardwares to try and find and install again. wouldnt i have issues now tho? even after removing the second hd? its running pretty smoothly and the fan doesnt cut in and out anymore.

Re: hard drive crash help

any way, the problem was the ATA controler card. took that out, rearranged my hardware so i have my main drive as primary master and the second as primary slave, and the dvd/cdrw drive as secondary master. everything works perfectly. i unplugged the zip drive to save power since i never use it. problems solved! thanks everyone for the advice. (ps. only one porno vid on the old hard drive lol)
