| Re: Ubuntu! Wow, Ubuntu has pretty much taken over my setup since I last posted in here. I'm running 64 bit Desktop Edition on my desktop and it acts as a media centre with Dolby Digital output via SPDIF and also managing all my television channels via MythTV. I got a projector for a screen and set up my Wiimote as a bluetooth mouse so I just point the Wiimote where I want the mouse and click the trigger to select, it's much more friendly than using a mouse while sitting on the couch. And much more convenient when a movie is playing.
I also picked up 2 old laptops that were busted for free and managed to put all the working parts together for one machine and got that running on 32 bit Desktop Edition. I'm going to give it to my brother for his birthday, he's always wanted a laptop and it's really snappy with Linux running on it even though it's a few years old. Nice laptop for $0! It's a Dell D600.
I also bought my dad a new computer and took his 8 year old Pentium 3 that he was using and I set up 32 bit Server Edition on that one so it runs Apache2 and serves my websites off of it. It's pretty fast too, I don't notice any lag at all when I'm browsing the sites, I think I'm going to quit paying for hosting and just host them exclusively myself. I'm also going to set up Zoneminder on it which is a camera monitoring application for servers where you can log into it over SSL and view a security style layout of all the webcams hooked up to it. It even works with wireless IP cameras so I'm going to set one up in the parkade to record any motion in and around my car.
Man, this thing is indestructible and there are so many cool (and free) applications for it that you'd never be able to afford in Windows, nor would you be able to find a working pirate version of them. All I have left now that is Microsoft is my Vista laptop which I sent away to HP to fix in December and nobody seems to know where it is. Oh, and my carputer which runs XP simply because there aren't any good media management, touchscreen friendly applications for Linux yet.
