Almost a turbo.

For what I spent on this, I could have almost turbo'd my car. This is more fun for me, though.

HP 22" widescreen
Ultra X Blaster Case
PC P and C 725w PS
Plextor DVD Burner
36GB 10k rpm Raptor, in Thermaltake cooler
Ultra fan controller
2 x 2GB Mushkin 1066 DDR2 (can't get it to work with all 8GB I bought)
2 x 500GB WD SATA 3.0g/s (may get RAIDed)
Asus Maximus Formula board
Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad
Zalman CPU cooler
2 x Diamond Radeon HD3870s, Crossfired, and OC'd with Catalyst for now

Runs Photoshop and UT3 pretty well.

Re: Almost a turbo.

....What does it do?

Ha ha, Im just kidding. Well, with all that processing power, you're computer could calculate the G forces you would have felt if you got a turbo for your car. I need a new compy bad.... Nice case on yours though. I think it looks clean.

Re: Almost a turbo.

if you want a quick way to access 4gb+ ram, with a student ID you can get a free copy of Windows Server 2003 R2 through microsofts "dreamspark" program (along with a host of other expensive softwares). Just search for dreamspark for the site. You have to sign up for a MS passport account and jump through some other hoops and whatnot, but its a small bit of time invested for $3000+ worth of free software.

Plus, win2k3 server is nerdvana. If you end up downloading it, let me know. Theres a couple things you have to do to set it up as a workstation, but once its set up, its WAY more stable than XP SP3.

Im running 4gb DDR2 800 and its rediculous. Why close programs when you can just run all of them at the same time? :-)

i'm running server 2003 on my server. xp x64 on this. it's not a 64 bit os issue, tho. it's a hardware issue, kinda. the thing will run fine, and recognize 4 gigs, where the limit should be 3 to 3.5 with a 32 bit os. however, when i put all 4 2gb sticks in there, everything goes to hell. dram voltage is set to the high end of spec, and timings are manually set to spec. i have to look into turning the timings up a bit, and possibly slightly overvolting the ram, and/or northbridge. for now, i'm happy with 4 gigs. the other two can sit in the box till i feel like messing with this again. as it stands now, ps cs3 loads in under 3 seconds.

CPU cooler is a Zalman CNPS 8000. I have some arctic silver on there, but my temps aren't as low as they should be. I'll have to take it off and re-grease the chip eventually. Fortunately, the cooler is pretty easy to put on and take off. As far as the raptop goes, yeah, they still sell 'em. They're $100 a piece. I didn't need anything bigger for a boot drive, and i'm sick of having my boot drive partitioned. If i install anything big, application wise, i just put the files on one of the 500 gbs.

i suppose it could be used for that. but it's mostly for ram and cpu intensive stuff. i've been playing with hdr photography lately. did this in about five minutes.

Re: Almost a turbo.

Nice to see another computer guy here. My gaming machine is an xbox360 and a x86 machine running

2.4 ghz Core 2 Duo
2 GB ram
500 Gb HD
Nvidia 7950GT

Still runs newer games rather well but I am waiting for this summers roll out of newer cards. I gave up on ATI because of driver issues or cards prematurely failing. Even the GF had the same issues with ATI. Nice to see someone rocking the crossfire though. I am posting this from a Macbook though, I spread the love!

Re: Almost a turbo.

ah, the arctic silver requires just a rediculously small amount spread over the chip with a razor. i feel inadequate now because my laptop is sweeter than my desktop and i can't do much modding with a laptop.
