Digital Camera advice, please.

I'm looking at buying a new digital camera, upgrading from my current Nikon 3mp, 3x zoom pocket point and shoot. I was considering getting either a Nikon, or Canon DSLR, but I've decided I don't want to spend that kind of money right now, and that it would probably be too much of a jump for me, given what I have now. I've been looking at the Canon S5 IS, 8mp, 12x zoom. link here. I think this is enough camera for me, but I'm a bit concerned about one thing with it. Some of the reviews have said this camera produces images with a lot of noise in low light conditions. Of all the things that piss me off about my current camera, the inability of it to take decent pics at night is at the top of the list. Does anyone have any experience with this specific model of camera?? Does it suck as bad in low light as people say it does?? Does anyone have any other recommendations for other models?? Basically, I want something substantial sized, not another pocket camera, that does about 8mp, has a 10-15x zoom, or slr mm equivilant, for about $400. I'm leaning away from an slr because by the time I bought a telephoto lens, to get me the magnification i want, I'd be well over budget. Help me out. Thanks.

Re: Digital Camera advice, please.

I never heard of this camera, but do have a lot of experience with cannon. They are good cameras and the technology in them is just amazing. My recent camera was a sony cybershot from like 1998. Yeah... Talk about old school. My buddy picked up a cannon DSLR (rebel xti) and WOW.

As for the low light conditions- check out flickr and poke around for some images shot by that camera for real images shot by people to see how it really performs.

Given the price difference, I'd just got for the DSLR, if it be the rebel XT or the XTI. It is really a top of the line camera- and the kit lense is pretty good. If you want future expandabilitiy, there are many lenses to choose from down the line.

Re: Digital Camera advice, please.

get a nikon d60. its a new model. might be almost the same with the d40x.
its really hard to take night time pics.your hands has to be really still without flash, or use a tripod. another option is to get a nice speedlight if you want to use flash.
