This is an entry level GPS Navigational piece that does exactly that and does it well. If you do not care about mp3 play back or viewing pics on your gps. This is a very nice piece. It has the bluetooth capabilities that the more pricey pieces have but THE BLUETOOTH IS NOT ACTIVATED OUT OF THE BOX. You will have to crack it.
Like everything else I own I can not leave it OEM, I have to change it, crack it or mod it or just break it.
So I started this thread to share some of the stuff I have found.
First I am not going to be held responsible if YOU break your GPS. I have done everything to mine myself but I am an above average computer user. So if you do not have at least some advanced skills PLEASE DO NOT TRY ANY OF THIS.
It is better not to edit any file directly on your TomTom! You'd should create and edit files on your computer. When you are finished, copy them into the correct folder on your TomTom.
If you do plan on replacing any file on your tomtom do remember to make a backup of the original file. I strongly suggest making a backup of the entire tomtom drive.
1. The TOMTOM uses linux OS.
2. You can change a lot of things in the OS yourself.
I have found a really cool way to add POI or routes.
It is called TYRE, and it is way too cool. You have to launch the program then launch Google Earth or Google Maps. Then you plan the route or mark the POI. Tyre then copies the route or POI to the TOMTOM. Way too easy and cool. http://www.janboersma.nl/gett/index.php Tyre does not depend on your hardware, but on the software that has been installed on it. So, it can be used in combination with other TomTom systems or with a PDA. There is only one condition: you should have the right sofware installed on your TomTom or PDA: TomTom Navigator version 5 or up.
Just do a simple Google search for tomtom voices. The voices will have atleast 2 files sometimes 3. Copy the voices to the voices folder on the tomtom. (It should be in the root folder.) Turn off the tomtom then turn it back on.
Changing the splash screen.
Just find a picture you are happy with, resize it to 320x240 and call it "splash.bmp". Then save it to the root directory again and turn off the tomtom and turn it back on. Done!
Changing the closing screen.
It is the same procedure as the splash screen just name it "antitheft.bmp".
I am currently working on changing the blue arrow to a car or pic of my choosing. This is a little harder to do than the previous models or even the upper line. The "ONE" does not have a folder for "Cars".
After I change the arrow I will be working on the BT crack.
If there are any cool tricks you know are cracks you have found post them up. I would love to check them out.
If you have a review or a comment about the tomtom lets hear it.
Once again this is an entry level GPS. So I don't need to hear about how you don't like it because it wont rotate your tires for you. It does what it was designed to do.

Ok guys I have been really busy at work lately and haven't had that much time to really mess with this since the OP.
But if you fell like it, here is a very good website for playing with the the code. http://www.opentom.org/Main_Page
It is also good if you have a carputer or another piece of hardware capable of running gps software.
Check it out.
i was in a position to buy either tomtom ONE 3rd or the garmin Nuvi 200...
i bought nuvi 200 in the end....I could still return and buy the ONE...
how hard is it to add/upload a new map to ONE?
the thing is that I also want simple GPS with no fancy features...these two fit the bill....It seems to me that I have to pay for new map on both....if there's a way of doing it free....that's the one I will keep..

I have found a lot of the tomtom maps out on the web.
They are easy to change. You can even use the TYRE software I mentioned earlier to make new routes or create your own points of interest. (There is a link with explanation in post one.)
But why do you need a new map? The tomtom uses one map for each country, so if you have the USA and Canada map you are good to go.
You can download all the updates to the map with the official tomtom software, It is called tomtom Home. It is a good easy to navigate software that lets you upload or download all the stuff you need to. It will also let you share your map alterations or additions with others or the world.
I was wondering if you were still looking at how to change the blue triangle to another item...you'd be the hero of the TomTom forums if you found a way.
I feel your pain Devani. I bought a Nuvi 200. Got me lost in metro Portland when I was on my way to a meeting. Returned it the next day and started using the Nav on my cell phone (Sprint) and it's worked just fine for me.
