My brother gave me his old desktop (about three years old) because it suddenly stopped working. So I switch out the power supply and bam I get power. But then I hook it all up and no matter what monitor I use, the computer can't recognize it. Any ideas on whats wrong and how to fix it?

Try going to the hardware manager and find your monitor. Go into the properties and do update driver, don't use windows update, install from a specific location, dont' search, and finally uncheck the box beside Show Compatible Hardware. This will give you a list of all the drivers. Choose (Standard monitor types) from the list to the left and then Plug and Play Monitor from the list to the right. Continue on and it should be back to a plug and play monitor.

It might not be the video card. Maybe the monitor is out of range.
do you get an image at all? If you do, try booting into VGA mode (press F8 when booting and select it from the menu). After it boots, change the display settings.
