Monitor Resolution question

When you see a monitor's resolution, like 1280 x 1024, that means how many pixels across by how many pixels vertically, right?

So a 17" monitor that is 1280 x 1024 and a 19" monitor at 1280 x 1024 would have exactly the same amount of display on the screen, it would just be bigger on the 19" one, right? In other words, if you went from 17" 1280 x 1024 to 19" 1280 x 1024 you wouldn't gain any more usable screen area, right?

So why get a 19" monitor that only goes to 1280 x 1024 when you can get the same thing in 17" for cheaper? You'll just have to put the monitor farther away from you = the same size in the end to your eyes.

Do they make 19"s that are 1600 x 1280?

Thats super ghey if a 19's max resolution is 1280x1024 when a 17 has the exact same max res. All 77 19" and 99 17" LCDs on Newegg have a max res of 1280x1024. Doesn't make sense to me man.

That is dumb. I would think 19"s would have 1600 x 1024 but I guess not.

I just realized the purpose of 19" monitors. They give you the same amount of on screen information as a 17", but you don't have to sit as close to them. I retract my previous statment about them being stupid.

my 19" crt's max res is 2048 x 1536 but it makes stuff so small i usually run it at 1600 by 1200. (lol, i have a $225 monitor though!) viewsonic professional series +f 19"

1280 x 1024 is just right on my 19. bigger screen is better until you get past 21". who plays with a 17" monitor *snort*. ive played on computer that had a 27" lcd and you have to sit like 5 feet in front of the thing... badass monitor, just cant stand sittin that far away.
