Just Got my New Computer Components in the Mail !! Yeah... i think
Okay… So I just received all the components to build my new computer
from www.tigerdirect.com First off let me say I wasn't that satisfied
with tigerdirect and probably won't shop there again.
1) First time I ordered, I tell the guy I want a top of the line,
Motherboard and CPU… And the rest of the Package to be so-so as long
as I can upgrade later. He sells me on a bottom of the line 755
socket Pentium 4…. I find out (Thanks to this forum) that my CPU is
not even close to top of the line and cancel that order.
2) So I tell the new guy I want to go with one of those fast AMD
Athalon 64 processors and a top of the line motherboard. He sets
everything up… comes to $650 ($50 more than with the Pentium) and I'm
thinking cool deal… I asked him more than twice… "is this everything I
need" … I receive everything and realize that I don't have a friggin
Hard Drive…. Ugh… So I call back, talk to some new guy, he gets me
free shipping on a Hard Drive, but won't give me any other discounts…
Ugh… another $65
So Anyway, I will be trying www.newegg.com next time I need parts or
for buying a new computer.
Motherboard Processor combo $360
4 gigs or RAM
2 IDE headers
8 Serials ATA headers
3 Internal USB
4 USB on back
intergrating 8 channel sound
fire wire on rear
PSI express slot video card
4 PSI slot
MSI motherboard
This is my first time, building a computer, or even changing
components… Very inexperienced with this stuff…
So far I have done:
Install the Power Suppy to the Case
Install the CPU in the Mother Board
Install the CPU Fan
Install the Mother Board to the Case
Install my one Memory stick to the Mother Board
Install my Video Card to the Mother Board
Install my DVD-+R to the Case
Install my Old 3.5" Floppy POS to the Case
Plugged in the Power to the Mother Board
Two Locations a 4 plug and a 20 plug (QUESTION TO FOLLOW)
Okay so here is a picture of my mother board where I'm at now…..
I think everything thus far has been fairly easy… I've been taking my
time, reading the directions.
I do have a some questions though… The power supply has a 20 plug male
to go to the mother board, However the mother board has a 24 plug
female… The plug only seems to fit leaving the top 4 plugs on the
mother board empty and plugging in the power supply to the bottom.
However, the plastic snap that holds the plug in place does not snap,
it is one notch too low. (This is the plug to the right of the CPU
Fan)
Also if you could verify the location of the second 4 plug from the
power supply, (It is to above and to the Left of the CPU Fan)
That's really as far As I've gotten. I'm a little confused as to
where to plug all the other stuff in… There are a group of odd little
plugs, coming from the switches, USB, Firewire and lights and such on
the front panel of the Case…. Any clue where they plug in… I'm
thinking the Bottom Left of the Mother Board ????
Also the instructions are a little confusing to me because they are
constantly using acronyms, it doesn't say … Plug the DVD drive here…
Plug the Floppy Drive Here… Plug the Hard Drive here…
If someone could point out the locations to plug the DVD, Floppy, and
Hard Drive, to the Motherboard, I would greatly appreciate it. Also a
brief run down of …. How many power connections to each, do I have to
connect the DVD to the floppy ??
Any tips are appreciated!!!

read your motherboard manual. the markings are there.
FDD-0 (black in that pic) = floppy
IDE-0 or IDE-1 (up to you, they're yellow) DVD drive, and any IDE hard drives.. but
since you have SATA, plug your HDD into SATA-0 (orange)
yes, your power connection should be right if the plugs snapped in. you don't need to use a 24-pin PSU if you have the 5v connection (the 4-pin one) that you have on your board. also, generally one device only needs one power connector.
USB should be marked FP_USB or something like that, check your motherboard manual for exact plugs if they aren't clumped together, and firewire should be something like 1394_0
the case switches for power and whatnot are on the bottom right, in that cluster of pins with the various color coded. again, check your manual.
oh and one more thing.. tigerdirect sucks

Dragoon, Thanks for all the help... that was perfect... Like I said... the manual is a little confusing to me cuase it uses so many acronyms and doesn't state that SATA is your hard drive, So your Post was Very Helpful.
04vic, It's a MSI Platinum Edition, NVIDIA nFore 4 Chipset Based K8N Neo4 ....
I think... that is what the manual says. I have the manuals, so I don't think the link will help more... Just all very new for me...
Thanks again for the Help Guys... Going get back to work, then I'll post up more Questions and take more pictures.
MSI's always have cool colours in their motherboards.
Good Chipset on that one..but i'm never a fan of MSI..
Asus all the way. haha..
but at least you didnt get something shtty like Asrock..even though their a part of Asus..their really peice of crap..
Good luck with the new system !
Okay I'm a little stuck figuring out where all these wires from the front of the Case go...
I plugged in the Fan.
I plugged in the "HDD LED" .......... into JFP1
I plugged in the "RESET Switch".... into JFP1
I plugged in the "Power Switch" ..... Into JFP1
I can't find a Power LED for JFP1
And I have these left over that I don't know what to do with
Sorry about the light.. the bottom 3pin one says the same thing as the top
On top of having those left over... I can't find in the manual what this "JLPC1" thing on the motherboard does ???
I also don't have anything pluged into JFP2
In the Manual .. the top four pins say "SPEAKER"
and bottom three say "POWER LED"
I've got the power hooked up to it, and I got the IDE hooked up to it...
But on the back of the DVD player there are a few extra spots... looks like one will fit one of the smaller plugs coming from the power supply, I don't know what the others are for... Do I need to worry about these, isn't power in, output out all there is to the DVD ???
oh by the way, you can't use a 20 pin male power connector to your 24 pin female on the motherboard. you need a 20pin to 24 pin adapter, please do NOT turn on your machine with a 20 pin into a 24 pin without an adaptor.
if you wanted top of the line, $650 doesn't really cut it, next time give me a ring and I'll help you set up one with whatever budget you have.

no you dont, all you need is the flat IDE plugged in, and one of those 4 pin power semi transparent power plugs. The other white power plugs are for other stuff, the smallest one for your floppy drive, and other ones for auxillary which i've never used before.
the other 2 sockets on your DVD drive (on the left if look at the back of the drive) are for sound cards if you have a sound blaster or other secondary sound cards, whcih you dont, so don't worry ^_^

Crap!! I need a Power Connector??? Where can I get one of those... Can I like go out to radio shack and get one, or do I have to order it ??
I just wanted a top of the line processor and motherboard, the rest is upgradable.
well on the back of the dvd player there should be other pins and jumpers. That is to set the drive to master or slave. in your case you want master (read the manual). There should be an audio set of connectors in the back too.
chocobo, I thought you could run the board on a 20 pin connector. I remember reading somewhere that you could. Anyways its probably not a good idea to run it on a 20 pin. and its not just a simple cut and slice job, YOU NEED AN ADAPTOR. Just go to your local computer place to get it.
its not a good idea to run a 20 pin and use a molex 4 pin....
just spend the money and get a nice 24 pin...
NF4 is a power picky... esp when u add the higher end cards....
also i dont remember if you had 2 sticks of memory...
but your system is dual channel... u need two matched sticks...
this will let you open up all the bandwidth your cpu has to offer....
Msi board is a sweet board... i wouldnt even other with the front audio...
if u make a mistake.. you might send voltage to the wrong place.

Last image. the area of jpf2... the bottom 3 that are green is your power LED...
Okay... Sorry for the confusion I found the "power LED" on the Mother... I can't find any "Power LED" on the Front of the Case...
Tuggy are you saying not to bother with any of the plugs from the front of the case in pics 1-3 ??? Will I still be able to use head phones ??
I don't understand the molex 4 pin....NF4 stuff... what is the Deal with the power... I want something EASY .. .I dont' want to have to try to re-wire the power... Where can I get one of those adapters??? Can I find one at Best Buy, Circuit City... I've never purchase computer hardware in my life.
the second picture of cables you have are for front panel firewire
and the third picture is for front USB... personaly the only ones i would use is the ones for front USB....
ok pages 2-19, - 2-21 tell you how to set up the front audio, firewire and usb... They tell you to put each cable at what pin. so your all set.
Also on page 2-11 it talks about power and 20 pin ATX... you can use it...
just follow their specs... but when u get the $$ get a nice 24 pin PSU.
I have an Antec one that i bought from Compusa for 160.
oh yea.. u can still use headphones.. just have to plug them in the rear instead.
sorry about the geek lingo... its a habit...
not sure of your Power leds.. u have two.. i gotta go but will get back to you
