Ok, over thanksgiving I put a "homemade" turbo setup that I've been working on for about 3 months onto my 98 ex. It's based on a T3 turbo from a 92 eclipse GSX that my dad had in his salvage yard and a Saab 900 intercooler (I got a manifold off eBay heh, and the piping was pieced together from the two cars and the blow-off valve is standard 6 psi from the Saab...all together the car runs REALLY good now and seems to still be running nice and rich from what I can tell by the air/fuel ratio guage I installed not too long ago.
My question is this...on the highway I'm riding around at 4000rpm and this is with the turbo now so I'm wondering if this extra boost would affect driveability in the long run?? like extra stress on the highway causing me to fry a piston or burn a ring or something?? I'm happy that I can actually pull out and pass people now without having to downshift but still......
What I want to know is...is there any company out there that makes custom ratio gear clusters for honda manual transmissions?? I'd like to widen my gear ratio out a little in the gears and give me some more top end with a lower 80mph rpm mainly...the car will never see over 100mph for another 3 years until I get the suspension finished for autocrossing and SCCA class running but this would also be prep for that too as the class I'm wanting to run it is high speed endurance...
any help?

If your running rich then you shouldn't be burning or frying anything. I saw in a mag somewhere a while ago where they sell different ratio gears. It was something like SCC or Super Street or something. But yeah there are definatly companies out there that sell different ratio gears.

heh, you wouldn't happen to be able to shoot a generic price for those that you remember by any chance?? I'm not looking to put them in immediately as it won't be until next time I make the trek home that I do it but I was hoping they'd be under $600 or so for a complete set of at least forged gears (with or without planetary setup if need be) I've rebuilt manuals before so it wouldn't be any big deal for me to rip apart my planetary centers as long as I could have the actual gears themselves....
I was hoping for something like that response to the turbo setup with the running rich answer...now I've just gotta figure out how to tinker with this blow-off valve once I get a boost gauge...YES!! I'm running without a boost gauge haha....I checked the factory blow-off valve by cranking the saab car before removing the blow-off valve (dad would let me have the piping and intercooler, etc from the saab as long as I left the running motor and turbo alone...) the GSX had a thrown rod and he sold the transmission already so it's turbo was up for grabs...
Ok, im still new to this turbo thing, but from what i understand so far, its the wastegate that controls your turbo's psi setting, the BOV is there to release excess pressure when you close down on your throttle body during shifts. correct me if im wrong on this......
hell I don't know, this is my first turbo car too..I thought the blow-off valve could be set to release pressure when the intake velocity got over 6 psi or whatever it was set at....
please dont' tell me I'm missing a part now that I'm 300 miles from home....
alot of people use a boost controller to adjust PSI.
my manager said some people use an EVC?he said its a little gadget that looks like a turbo timer
a wastegate helps smaller turbos reduce lag and prevent it from spinning too quickly. the wastegate is a valve that opens up and allows some exhaust to bypass the turbine.
omega blue is right. for the rest of you. the wastegate is what you use to adjust your psi setting. the bov releases the presure inside the intake piping when the throttle plate closes so the back pressure doesn't blow up the turbo. There are also what you call electronic boost controller. so you can adjust the boost setting from inside the car. you also might want to get a turbo timer. this keeps the car running for a predetermined amount of time after the key as been removed to allow all of the oil in the turbo to remove itself. the main cause of turbo failer is the turbo burning up. just make sure when you park to leave the car running for about a minute or so to make sure you give the turbo time to do its thing.
ok, I'm a little iffy on the turbo timer thing as I usually ignore my parking break all together and just leave the car in gear when parking it as I've got a manual. How do you wire these things in? and do they only function to keep the car running after the key is off or do they do other things?? While we're on the subject how do boost controllers work too as I know there weren't any wires on my turbo setup so I don't understand how one of those things are figured into the equation basically??
Now back to the topic at hand...anyone know a company NAME for getting custom gears for my transmission???
