I sold a couple guns yestarday at the big Reno gun show, and now I have about 525 dollars in my pocket. My transmission has issues with it and I've been wanting to replace it for a long time now. One of the major things I'm considering is removing it myself. On the 6th gen, it can be lowered from the bottom. What special tools, how much money, and how difficult is the whole operation?
One of the main things I'm not sure about is weather I should rebuild my old trany, or just find a used one at the junk yard. In the process, I also want an improved flywheel. The stock one developes hard spots fairly easily causing major chatter which is cured by slipping the clutch. I have to do it almost every day.

Also, I wanted to ask, if I were to replace the trany myself, is it possible/realistic to replace the manual trany with an auto one? Or are there just too many parts to replace?
dont even try to rebuild unless you know exactly what to do. even just swapping the trans is a big job. just be sure you know what youre getting into. read thru the service book and you will prolly decide not to do it. auto swap i would say is out of the question.

I'll read through it, but what would you do in my case? What's the cost of getting it done? A trany costs around $400 if I'm not mistaken, and then another 300-400 for swap? Oh and what about the clutch that's present in the "new" transmission? Would I want to replace it? Depends on how much wear it has on it right?
if you are swapping an exact tranny for an exact tranny, it is simply take out and put in. but if its with another tranny, its much much harder... id suggest a cherry picker...best and simplest.

You mean it's harder if I were putting say... an EX trany in a DX?
yeah keep the models the same ex to ex, dx to dx, just to be safe... its really easy. i did a eg hatch (d15)tranny swap by myself in about 4 hours. its really not that difficult, just take off the shift linkage, clutch slave (after its disconnected do not press the clutch), all the sensors connected to tranny, starter(dont know if you have to but i did), and the transmission mount. then all you have to do is remove the 6 ( i think) big 17mm bolts that hold on the tranny to the block. then with a little elbow grease and a pry bar it should come out fairly easily.
then just drag it under the bottom with a jack under the tranny. make sure you have the car high enough so the jack and the tranny have enough room to come out. as for the clutch/flywheel, you need a set of 12 point sockets, i think its a 12 point 10mm and a 12 point 17mm. you also need the clutch alignment tool. the flywheel is torqued down to 80~lbs and the clutch is 20lbs.
then reverse order.
in addition to all that since your ripping out your whole tranny side i suggest you replace your oil seal there as well. around 10 bucks from honda give or take. its always good to have a new seal there when you are able to do it. i had that seal go out on me once in my 7th gen and it leaked oil on my flywheel surface. very bad outcome, lol.
tools needed:
basic tools sockets, extensions etc.
12 point 10mm and 17mm sockets
torque wrench
maybe a pry bar or a big screwdriver (to pry the tranny off the block)
jack that goes pretty high
jack stands
clutch alignment tool
HAPPY WRENCHING. i have a fidanza flywheel btw. AWESOME mod. greatly improved acceleration on the lower end.

I think you should rebuild what you have. getting a new one, and getting it in is going to cost you more then you have.
I do not consider myself to be a mechanical master. I do my own oil changes, have done brakes, suspension and other things. simple stuff. I'm not an expert and I was able to remove, dis-assemble, replace parts and re-install the transmission.
Granted this is not an easy task. It took me 11-14 hours start to finish. But it can be done.
Not to mention that I did it on the friggin curb.
If you're going to replace the clutch and flywheel, the only real issue you NEED to have correct, is the torque of the bolts and the pattern you secure it in. Any chilton manual will have this information.
definitely upgrade to aftermarket clutch and flywheel, I have an exedy organic clutch and the fidanza flywheel, love them both!
Awesome awesome info, thanks to both of you. Before I ask the other questions, is it just me or is it difficult to find a jackstand that raises a car to the point where you can max out the the jackstands? I've run into a couple situations where I maxed out the jack, and I couldn't slip a stand under it even though it was on notch one! I'm hoping that maybe sears (craftsman) has a descent jack. What do you guys recommend?
Yeah, I'm very good at mechanics that's why I was considering rebuilding. So if you say it's do-able then I'm up for the challenge. I've got some free time coming up and I want to get this over with.
As for parts, can I get this stuff at majestic honda? I know that the flywheel and clutch are aftermarket, but what parts will I need from majestic other than a new oil seal? See this is tricky. It would be easy if there were a kit, but how am I going to know what I need? I can just see myself missing some small part...
I guess I'll post a DIY if I do it. My timing belt DIY is laking a bit, so I'm going to put in more effort on this one.
i got a decent craftsman jack @ sears for a really good price. its maximum height is 22.5 inches (very high compared to those other puny jacks. its more of like a "racing style" jack. sits low to the floor w/ the spinning handle. came with the jack, pair of jack stands and a creeper for 99.99. its blue. i forgot the model etc. it gets about 2-3 notches away from maxing my stands out. good tip is to add a big wood block between the car and the jack so you can get more height out of it. and i dont know about all the parts you need. sorry.
Don't waste your time rebuilding your tranny, it'll never feel like an original. Just trade it in for what you can and get yourself a woman with all the proper plumbing and parts.
