Unexplainable stalling

I recently got a 2006 Civic DX-G, this is a problem I should've caught during my test drive but since the problem occurs at higher and I only test drove it at relatively low speeds, I only noticed it until later on....

anyway, I'm new at driving manual but I'm sure I'm not doing anything wrong here. anytime I'm going over maybe 70 km/h, and I want to come to a stop, I hit the clutch, slip it into neutral, and hit the break, which should work. as my RPM's go down, it should catch and stay put at close to 1000 RPM, but it doesn't. it just keeps going all the way to zero, ultimately shutting off the engine on its own. It always turns back on right away though with no problems...

I've been having to press the brake while still in gear so that I can let the RPM's go down gradually (I hope this is okay for the car...), and THEN I can go to neutral without the engine dying on me.

is this a common problem or something? My girlfriend's brother (who knows quite a bit about cars) tried it out himself and said it must be something with the computer, that it maybe just needs to be re-programmed or something...

anyway ideas?? I love my new car but it sucks having to worry about it dying constantly

Re: Unexplainable stalling

so it shuts off when u go into neutral and roll to a stop? or when u stop the rpms go down then up then down then up and then stall? if it does that its prolly ur timing is off i little. i had the same problem when i wud be at a redlight. had a rough idle and then it wud go up and down then stall. took to my buddy and told him to change my timing belt and i had no problems after that.

anyways good luck with the car.

Re: Unexplainable stalling

prolly just an idle air valve problem. if you let go of the throttle, and theres not enough space in the aic valve, the engine just chokes and dies. take off the TB and the aic and clean them with carb cleaner.

it shuts off when I go into neutral and roll to a stop, once the RPM's reach 0. I mean like, it's not the fact that I'm in neutral that makes it shut off, it's just the fact that the RPM's go too far down, and so it's not able to keep itself running.

that actually might make some sense...except that I wouldn't think such a new car would need cleaning like that already. I looked around in the engine bay but I couldn't find the TB or AIC (i'm not very familiar with Civics). could you help me out a bit as to where it is?

Re: Unexplainable stalling

mine needed cleaning bad after a couple years. the tb is right under the airbox where the air filter is. the iac is the lil assembly bolted to the tb where the two coolant hoses feed into on the left passenger side..

Re: Unexplainable stalling

I had made another thread about this but I now realize it could potentially relate to my stalling issue. I noticed my intake is cracked and has a nice hole in it.

would it make any sense at all that this could be causing the stalling? maybe cus the engine is getting bad air? rather than the nice filtered kind.

Re: Unexplainable stalling

thats not causing it to stall but that could be why your TB and aic valve need cleaned. If thats where I think it it then you are getting dirty air straight to your engine before its passing thru the filter. Do the above mentioned maintenance of cleaning the TB and such and patch that hole or get a new air box.

Re: Unexplainable stalling

yeah that makes sense.

I actually just ordered a cold air intake. I thought while I'm at it, I might as well get like a whole extra one horsepower out of it and have it look and sound cool too!

I tried cleaning the TB and AIC Valve last night (which is how I discovered the crack and such) but I couldn't really figure out how to remove the airbox. I undid the clips holding it in place, that's about as far as I got. the sensor didn't wanna unplug, yet I couldn't see any clips holding it in place. help?

Re: Unexplainable stalling

grab it and growl...j/k don't do that. The sensors are always a pain to get off. Check to make sure you are pushing in the "prongs" on it and pull firmly on the sensor clip, not by the wires. There should be some bolts holding that airbox on, it shouldn't just clip in. Not 100% familiar with the 8th gen but I know they wouldn't just clip it in place.

Re: Unexplainable stalling

well I mean the airbox itself could very well be bolted down, seems like it might be, but there are metal clips holding the top part of it, allowing access to the filter.

Re: Unexplainable stalling

an air leak could explain the stall too. normally there is vacuum and when you have a crack or the intake removed, the car takes alot longer to start. and you are changing the amount of air going to the engine so the ecu gets confused. the intake needs to be completely sealed up.

Re: Unexplainable stalling

so then shouldn't it be stalling anytime I rev it high and let it drop back down again (even parked in neutral)? why do I have to be actually rolling at a high speed for it to stall on me? that's what I don't get...

Re: Unexplainable stalling

Cars do the weirdest things. Sometimes the best thing to do is start fixing what you know is broken that might be causing the issue and see if it helps. Most of the time, it works. I'd check the IAC valve and get that hole taken care of before you try anything else. Like you said, it's a new car. So it's probably not a timing issue.
