I have a similar R-I kit for my o2 EX coupe and I followed your DIY and it was great except one problem.
The Place you ground the "brain" to isn't a very good place to ground a wire it is a metal screw connected to metal but the plastic interferes with the ground. I noticed this when playing with my dimmer switch when I accedntly tuched some bare metal underneth the dash on my car the lights got about 75% brighter. Then I realized that if I ground it there the lights were brighter. So you may want to find a way to put the wire behind the plastic so it is in direct contact with the metal, that is a much better ground.
And the t-tap is a great tool for tapping into the power wire (I know because I sell them ) and they are really cheap. as for them not being durable, that is only under the hood where weather can effect them.
P.S. Try to get a red one, its the right wire size for the guage of wire used on the cluster.
anyone bumbed into the reverse glow gauges that actually WORK for a 03 Civic EX Man? My cluster is only three gauges Left Tach, center Speedo, and temp and fuel on top of each other, funny huh? any suggestions? Thanks guys-laters
hey.. ive did this DIY in the summer... its winter here now.. and i took my car out for a drive last nite.. and when i flicked on my lights, the reverse indiglo didnt come on... the needles and the dash lights did, but the numbers in the gauges didnt... why is this??? does anyone hav the same problem? it werked fine during the summer, so im guessing its too cold maybe... if anyone has exprienced this, please reply to this posting....
Sometimes mine would flicker if the car wasn't started. But if they don't come on at all, the inverter is probably toast. They might sell these separately somewhere, but gauges are so cheap now anyway.

If its not too cold, I'd say check the connections again. Especially the ground. If they seem find, then it probably is the inverter. I had to buy a new one myself and I got mine here .
it's got a "on/off" switch only...when I turn on the headlight, the gauge light will not turn on automatcially, only the needles light up. I need to press "on/off" manually to let it on. Is there any solution to that?
thanks!
UPDATE:
this is what i got from the seller:

We suggest that you find help from professional installer, it might coz by mist-connect some wires.
what does that mean?..."mist-connect"?!...coz i noticed there is a pure red wire right next to the red/black wire, should i try to connect that wire instead?
I think your seller might have been trying to say it could be because of some mis-connected wires.
I'm assuming you're leaving the gauges in the "on" position when you turn off the car? I'm not sure what it could be. Maybe just rewire it again to make sure everything is secure?
As for the pure red wire...it's been a while since I messed with my gauges, but if I can remember correctly the pure red wire is for the headlights. Meaning your gauges will not get any power unless you have your headlights on (ie. it wont work with just your parking lights). I may be wrong though, cause again its been a while.
I guess if nothing helps, just attach the switch (if you have the flat switch) onto the back of the headlight "knob" so you can just turn on the parking/head lights and press the on switch for the gauges with one motion.
hey were picture doesnt work..but owell..so after I unscrew the two top screw i'll jux pull it out slowly...or are there any other screws under the it...I'm not talking about the cluster tho just the first step of you instruction
After taking out the two screws, just grasp the black trim and pull straight towards you HARD! There is one clip on each side. The first time will be the toughest, because there's some glue between the pieces. You need to use some muscle to pull it off. Then tilt the steering wheel down to remove it.
