Well, I finally finished. Sounds good, but the way the Random Tech downpipe bolts onto the header leaves leaks....I guess i'll hafta get it welded. And there is a lot of rattling from the undercarraige. But im happy it's done
Did you pick up the gasket from honda... I dont know if where the header bolts to the RT downpipe if you'll need that- but I'm thinking thats whats leaking.

It's hard to explain, but the opening of the downpipe is fluted. Kinda like the end of a horn...
The bracket you see in the pic slides up and down...

And the top of the downpipe meets the bottom of the header right here
there's no spot for a gasket that i can see, and it is just the thin metal rim from the downpipe opening touching the flat piece on the header you see there, and since it's fluted, its bigger than the actual opening (pipe diameter) The bracket bolts onto the header and kinda sandwiches them together.
Am I doing this wrong? I used everything they gave me. and it all fits well. Maybe i just need to get it welded or something.
Ok, I brought it to my favorite muffler shop and they put a gasket between the downpipe and header (which should have been included with the header or downpipe..oh well) and they found another leak at another junction and fixed that. Also it doesn't rattle at all now
Ask me your questions DX/LX header/exhaust questions!!!
This will be updated as information is needed.
First many people with DX/LXs want to know what header will work.
First, the EX header wont bolt up to your existing stock exhaust. Second, you WILL loose your cat. Here are your header options if your cool with your peashooter exhaust and no cat:
Kamakazi part number: ??
OBX part number: 10-1602-3D
Will an EX header bolt up to the head of an DX/LX engine?
Yes, the bolt pattern on both the D17a1 (DX/LX) and D17a2 (EX) are the same.
Additional notes:
The DX/LX exhaust has spring loaded bolts that connect the end of the header to the rest of the exhaust system; these are kind of a pain in the butt to reach but they come off eventually.
It says the DX/LX downpipe is connected to the header with spring loaded bolts, yet my EX has that as well. Do I actually have a DX/LX? How can I tell I have an EX D17a2?

Pop your hood, locate your motor, from that locate your block. Facing the exhaust side of your motor, your block will be stamped in the top left with the type of motor it is.

I looked, all i see is a block serial number engraved and a white sticker with a barcode. None of the numbers resemble d17a1 or 2.

I'm gonna simplify it for you... does your sparkplug wire cover say vtec or honda? (Its the black plastic piece on top of your valve cover). If it says vtec its an ex.
I know this is the "The ultimate DX/LX header/exhaust FAQ" thread, but I could not find the answer to this simple conundrum..
I have a 1998 Civic DX sedan (4dr) 1.6L
With brand new DX header and catalytic convertor in place. How can I avoid putting on a OEM exhaust which rot out in about 5 minutes? I like the sporty Catback systems because they are stainless steel and would be better in NY where the salt the roads all the time.
I need to keep costs down and keep looking at Ebay but do not want to get stung buying something that does not fit.
The question is can it be done? If not I'll just buy the tin crap they sell at autoparts stores.
You can pick up a 2.25" stainless tubing kit for like $150-175 bucks and then either you or a muffler shop can weld it up. Cheap, easy, quality. Can't beat that.
