I was driving in a rain storm the other night and right before i pulled up to my friends house i noticed a weird sound coming from my engine. I pop the hood and this rubbing/grinding noise is coming from the engine. Initially I thought it was from inside the motor so i shut it off quickly. I got out a flashlight and started looking around. I push on my cam gear to see if it is loose. ITs not but ahhah!!! there is a line worn all the way through the belt in the exact spot all around the belt. hmmm sumthin is rubbing I look down int he cover with the light and there is an old rusty bolt stuck in the very bottom wedged against the cover and the belt. its like the belt was trying to suck it in but there is only soo much room so it couldnt move any farther. So it screwed my belt, tore it up and made it a little loose. NOW I have to take off the crank pulley to get to the timing cover ehich i need to remove to get the bolt out and the new timing belt in. THE QUESTION IS HOW THE HELL DO I GET THE DAMN CRANK BOLT OFF??? Does the bolt loosen counter-clockwise or clockwise??? How should I stop the engine from moving?? I tried lodging a screwdriver in the flywheel and the housing. It seems pretty solid, but i dont want to screw my flywheel up. Once i get the crank pulley bolt off, do I need some sort of puller to remove the pulley/balancer. Or can i knock it free witha rubber mallet??? I might order a new timing belt off the internet. Does anyone think autozone will have a timing belt for my 2002 ex???? ANy answers or help is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks

But yes AutoZone or Pepboys, or anyparts store will be able to get your timing belt in a day if they do not have it in stock.
Also are you talking about the drive belt or the timing belt. It's early so maybe i'm not reading right.
Regardless, I think you might want to invest $12 in a chiltons, especially if your going to change the timing. Sometimes Chilton's sucks though. I dunno. I haven't done a timing belt yet.
to get to the crank bolt take off the tire and plastic splash guard you should see the bolt in there... but you shouldnt have to do that to change the timing belt ... and make sure u dont turn the engine backwards you can screw alot of stuff up.... id say bring it to a mechanic

man you have it all wrong.
in order to remove the timing belt, you need to remove the PS pump and belt, the alternator and alternator belt, valve cover, throttle cable clamps, then remove the crankshaft pulley with a special handle and socket, then make sure you line up the pulley with TDC (top dead center).
Its pretty much a long process of removing shit. This is why honda charges about $500 to do this $20 replacement. NEVER use a mallet on a pulley, you will damage the pulley. Always use the recommended tool.
And just get a timing belt from any auto parts store, should be around $20. If you arent really skilled at this, then take it in to have it done. Otherwise be prepared to spend the whole day doing this job unless you are a wiz and do it fast.

damn slowcivic....i took my car to the dealership today b/c mine started making that noise saturday night.
Come to find out, its the same problem as yours(I searched for the problem after it happened to me). Its still in warranty so they are replacing it, but damn, it could have been major.
Too get that bolt off you need an impact wrench... I know cause I did mine today... We used a cheap one that plugged into a car lighter socket. It would build up speed and then catch and impact on it. Took like 10 or 12 hits before it come off, but it did! So if ya got access to one do it that way!
And be sure to listen to all these guys cause everything ive seen on this forum so far is true! Line up, all kinds of shit needs to be removed, and yes you can get a timing belt for an 02 civee ex from autozone cause thats where I got mine and I own the same car.

That's a can of worms man. Took my 3 days to remove and replace everything (including water pump), but I work slow and careful. See my signiture timing belt DIY.

You got lucky then because a cheap impact wrench didn't work for me. Mine plugged into the wall, and after it didn't work I took it back to the store. I was going to take it back any way but uhhh...
That thing is on there with like.... 120-180 foot pounds of torque. I can't remember anymore, but by hand it requires a cheater bar over the 24 inch breaker bar. And doing it that way requires bumper removal which is all a big hastle.
