I keep reading people reffering to having to worry about detonation, especially when using forced induction and or changing the timing...what exactly is detonation and what causes it(might be the same question)...I have looked around and haven't found a concrete answer. I was wondering if ya'll could help me out?

DETONATION sounds like static, its when the mixture in the chamber combusts before it is supposed to, causes stress and can affect the engine in bad ways, suggestion to reduce detonation is higher octane fuel
Detonation has to do with compression and timing.....
The more compression and timing the more likely the chance for detonation. Detonatino is basically the A/F mixture exploding not burning like it should.
My GTI 1.8T is a stock turbo so it has a knock sensor built in that listens for detonation and lowers boost (i.e. compression) and timing to prevent the detonation.
If you FI a civic your gonna have to tune your car and keep listening for detonation.
You can run lower boost and higher octane to prevent detontion. Also having a good IC will help to lower intake temps and prevent detonation. Choosing the right heat range of a spark plug is another concern especially when dealing with N2O. Water injection is another solution if you can't get rid of detonation by other means.....
BTW detonation is alot worse for your car than misfiring...
Also while underboost the car should be running rich to create more power and to take some of the heat out of the intake charge and the combustion chamber to prevent detonation.
Yup, a relitivly unknown Fact, Gas, will spontaniously combust under pressure, How much pressure is determined by the Octane rateing, wich is the rato of heptane to octane.
Heptane handles compression very poorly. Compress it just a little and it ignites spontaneously. Octane handles compression very well -- you can compress it a lot and nothing happens. Eighty-seven-octane gasoline is gasoline that contains 87-percent octane and 13-percent heptane (or some other combination of fuels that has the same performance of the 87/13 combination of octane/heptane). It spontaneously ignites at a given compression level, and can only be used in engines that do not exceed that compression ratio.
So, Detination is when you are runnig too low of Octane for the compression of your engine. (The compression can be altered by altitude, Forced Induction and NO2).

no, its not. most engines have a little bit of detonation, also known as knock. but in excessive amounts it can be a problem, and then yes it can blow your engine.
So, that is what is meant by knock...hmmm, okay...you know i feel like an idiot sometimes...i can tear apart and rebuild an engine in a weekend, but i don't know some of the basic terms and conditions on the workings of an engine...how lame am i?
