Unhappy HID + Projectors = POSSIBLE?!?

No one can give me a solid answeron this question. I have Blue Ion Projector Headlights for my 2001 Civic EX Sedan. I want HID's....I have asked 4 GREAT sources this question, and I got 2 people saying "DOABLE" and 2 saying "IMPOSSIBLE". Here are the reasons that they "definitely won't work"

(1) HID's get too hot and would melt the plastic housing
(2) HID's act as a projection beam and splits the beam about 150 degrees, so when it hits the magnifying glass in the projector, it will send the beam ALL OVER the place (which has happened to my friends Integra, the HID's would light up the sidewalks, and NOT the ground in front of him...figure out that one)

I heard that there is a special "D2S " HID bulb that doesn't go 150 degrees, but makes it much more narrow, so it lets the projector light do the work.

So i have one installer saying "i will charge you $375 for K2 HID's (i think that's the brand name) and install them for you, if they look bad and you don't like them, I will personally take them out and change everything back, but I GUARANTEE they will light up the road like Yankee Stadium"

Then I have an installer saying "You are going to need your PIAA's to light up the road because the HID's will be all over the place"

I don't even know where to begin...SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!!

This is me
This is me after someone tells me a straight answer

Yes it would work two possible ways, and you can search and you will get about 10 different topics on this so I'll keep it short, first possibility is to retrofit audi/bmw projectors (swap out old projectors) and install the oe audi/bmw hid kit (or mix and match if you want, I prefer OE look in this dept). Or you can get an H1 HID kit and make a few adjustments to make it fit, you have to sand something to get the bulb to fit because it is too long and you also have to widen the bulb holder.

Yes, it could be done. You would just have to modify your projectors a little to fit the h1 hid bulbs in there. Im not quite sure what exactly it is you have to do, but I've seen people on this forum who have done them to their tyc projectors. About the HID's getting hot, i dont think thats true. Correct me if im wrong, but dont HID's actually draw less current right? I believe they only draw out 35w compared to the stock 55w. The reason their so bright is because they have more lumens or something like that. About the light getting scattered, thats a possiblity, but i guess you would just have to am your projectors more to the ground.

Go the OEM route, by finding some projectors from a BMW , E46 have the smallest projectors, and do it that that way. Your projectors were not meant for HID, they will throw light everywhere and blind people. As for the question to HID melting anything, Its false, HID bubs actually run a little cooler than halogen bulbs, also use less energy once they are warmed up.

Ok great....These are the projectors I have
Ebay Listing

I think they take the H3 bulbs, so couldn't I buy an H3 HID kit?!? Out of all the things I know about cars, this is probably my least knowledgable because I never thought I needed them because it was impossible. I rather the least amount of modifications possible to try to make stuff fit, I was hoping just have someone install it in without hassle like that. As for the Audi/BMW HID's, how would I go about getting them, just walking to the dealership and buying them?!?

PS - Thanks for your help guys

Chris

Just search ebay for hella hid, and hella projectors, you will find a few entries and that is where you buy them, a dealer would be the worst idea, they will just rape you with their inflated prices.

No way would HIDs produce more heat than a stock halogen. Just like LEDs they draw less power and run a lot cooler.

I had 194 hyper whites in my Saturn sidemarkers that ended up melting the cheap plastic, but when I put in LEDs no more problems.

I would like to eventually change to HIDs in my car, I think for that though I will pickup a set of BMW projectors or something and slide them in. It can be done with the right tools.

My only concern would be beam pattern and aiming because you would have to make sure you knew where the projector was going before you just slapped it in and let the light go.

I have HID's in my TYC projectors. I have had them in there for about 6 months with no problems. I actually had the same crome projectors that you have now. They are garbage. They are nothing compared to TYC's. TYC's light up the road a hell of a lot more. I suggest that you get some TYC's then come ask me about the retrofit.

Oh ya. The bulb that you want is called D2S. It's made for projector housings. Don't listen to people that say stupid things like, you're going to melt your lights. Or you'll blind everyone unless you buy real Audi or BMW projectors. Like some people have stated before. HID's run even cooler then your stock bulbs. HID=35watts Halogen=55watts. You will not melt your lights. You also will NOT be blinding people if your projectors are properly aligned. I haven't had anyone highbeam me since I have put them in. I have also parked my car on the side of the road and took my girl's car to drive towards my car. No glare what so ever.

The higher the K the less light they emit. TYC look less than ok with HID my suggestion to you would be to retrofit an OEM projector as I stated in a previous post. TYC projectors were not meant for HID, they were made for Halogen bulbs. I read in a actual car lighting forum that TYC projector will actually take some of the light away from HID, and they do glare, that’s the reason the Dept. of Trans. recently banned the sale of aftermarket HID kits. The retrofit of OEM HID projectors into non-HID housing is still a gray area, but if done right you will get a much better lighting result than just slapping a HID kit onto your TYC's. If you are looking for that BMW/Audi/New-Mercedes flicker/look and lighting go the OEM route, you will NEVER, and I do mean NEVER, get the same result from installing a HID kit into a halogen projector.
My 2 Cents!

See, this kind of leaves me baffled all over again. People telling me to buy new projectors, don't put the HID's in projectors, go OEM, DON'T go OEM, get the D2S Special Bulbs....Confusion all over again.....

I guess I'm just going to try putting the HID's in my current projectors, because I am very impressed how they light up the road now....

OK..Here we go. If you have TYC projector headlamps you can remove the existing low beam halogen projector and retrofit one from another vehicle, OEM BMW/AUDI/BENZ. D2S bulbs are OEM BMW/AUDI/BENZ, they are used in the HID projectors of these vehicles and WILL NOT fit your TYC projectors without modifying the base, difficult and illegal. There are two different types of OEM Bulbs, D2S as mentioned above are made for projectors of BMWs, Audis,2003+ Benz, and pretty much everyother auto manufacturer that uses HID Xenon projectors. There is a different type of OEM HID bulb and that is D2R which is used in cars that have reflector type HID headlights, like Acuras and Lexus'. Both of these bulbs WILL NOT fit the TYC headligths without modification. They are also alot longer than the H1 bulbs that regularly go into TYCs. And another thing you WILL! blind people if your TYC projectors are aligned right because the projector that comes with them is/was and will always be made strictly for halogen bulbs. It will throw alot of light above the cutoff and in turn that will blind people. In order not to blind once you have put Aftermarket HID into your TYCs you will have to point them downward, mmaking it unsafe for you, by giving you less light down the road, thus defeating the purpose of HID. Unless your purpose is HID lighting for looks and not safety go with an Aftermarket kit that will fit your TYC halogen projectors. But hope you dont blind a cop and have him pull you over, cause youll get a ticket, cops are pulling people over more often now than ever cause many states are in a finacial mess and they need revenue. If your looking for to get HID lighting for safety reasons go the OEM route by swapping the TYC projector with a OEM BMW/Audi projector.
again my 2 cents.
Thanks

here is a great deal going on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ory=36476&rd=1

You get,
2 ECE Hella Bi-Xenon Projectors from the European Audi RS-6 vehicle
ECE = European Approved meaning... You will get a REALLY Deep blue/purple color from far away compared to USDOT

2 Osram Xenarc D2S HID capsules with less than 5 hours burn time & 2 Bulb holders

IMO thats a good deal...

Here Is an H1 DIY For TYC Projectors
http://www.cyforce.net/forcesho/html...cord/hids.html

Also, If you plan on retrofitin your projectors... Make sure you seal it up right... Would suck if you did everything perfectly then got water spots all over the OEM projectors :x

RS-6 projectors are on of the biggest projectors out there, they might fit but its more than likely that you would lose your adjustability. I suggest going with non bi-xenon pre 2003 E46/3-series BMW or Audi TT projectors, which are much smaller and will most likely fit with the least amount of modification. Ive tried putting BMW X5 projectors into TYC headlights they are way to big. The X5 uses the same size projectors as the 2003+ Audi A6, RS6, and I think another MErcedes. They will not fit TYC or any other projector headlight for our Civics. Like I said earlier if you can get your hands on some non bi-xenon BMW E46/3-series, or Audi TT projectors you will be set. I can post pics later of the sets of projectors I have to give jyou an idea of size comparisons.

I have HID's in my TYC projectors, I got a kit and installed it myself. No problems. So yes, there's no reason why it shouldn't work, other than perhaps some bulbs would scatter more than others ..

There has to be a bixenon projector that will fit, I plan on retrofitting bixenon so I will have a dual high beam, because its is really bad for the hids to turn them off and then back on again (they have to re-start/warmup which leaves you with a period of about a minute of darkness).

Theyll restart with a bi-xenon projector too. The reason why they turn off has nothing to do with the projector. It has to do with the way our civics are wired, H4. Our low beam filament turns of when we switch our highs on. Blackcivic28 someone misinformed you.
