the dealership showed me how to do this a couple of days a go.
1) Have the car turned off.
2) Turn the "air condition position" knob to the left all the way (counter-clock-wise).
3) Hold the "back seat air circulation button" and the "a/c" button "DOWN". (don't touch the "defrost" button.
4) Start the car with the "BUTTONS" held down, and wait for 7 seconds.
5) All done. You can turn the "A/C" off and on now.
P.S. To turn the original feature back on, repeat all steps, but for "STEP 2", turn the knob all the way to the "right" (clock-wise).
these are the directions everyone used right? well i do not understand them. whats "right" mean? sorry for the stupid question my pops wants me to do this. thanks!

OK, here's an update. First off THANK YOU for sharing this with us. I've found a way to make it fool-proof, and even easier. You do not need to even start the car. The "vent" that people talk about is the rotary fan switch, but just twist all three knobs all the way to the left and you're set. The other part that was confusing people is the blinking recirc light. DON'T release the buttons when that starts to flash. Keep holding the two buttons down until the AC light also comes on. Then you can release them. Seven seconds is about right, but you can just wait for the AC light to finally come on. So here it is in a nut-shell:
OVERRIDING A/C

1) Have the car turned off.
2) Turn all rotary knobs to full counter-clockwise.
3) Press and hold both the recirculation and AC buttons
3) Turn the ignition key to "ignition on" position (last position before starting the car - or you can just go ahead and start if it you like) and keep both the AC and recirculation button button depressed for 7 seconds.
4) Wait for air recirculation button to stop flashing and for the AC button to light up.
5) Release buttons and turn the car off. You're all set.

I've noticed a bit of mis-information in this thread as well. Please note that hot air holds MORE moisture than does cold air. That is the entire reason for condesation. Warm air, holding lots of moisture then touches a cold surface (window, glass of beer, what have you) and the moisture cannot be held in the air any longer. It comes out as liquid. The AC dries the air through this same pricipal. That's the function of the condensor. In fact, AC was originally designed as a dehumidifier. Just happens to also have the effect of cooling the air, but that's somewhat of a side-effect. At least it used to be that way. Now we consider the dry air a side-effect.
Next - yes, the car IS designed to help you defrost quickly (by turning the AC on for us, since we're obviously too thick to do it ourselves), and that's great. BUT you don't always need the frigging AC on after it is defrosted, and you've warmed up the windshield enough to prevent the warm interior air from condensing on it. If only the AC would now turn itself back off when you move the dial away from defrost settings it would be perfect. But this is WAY closer to perfect now.

you said in step 2 to turn all knobs to the left(counter clockwise). what knob do you turn right to put original feature back??Or do you turn them all right(clock wise)??
While we're referring back to previous pages' followups here is a noteworthy point made by Bebop regarding the slightly different behavior of the '04+ cars...

For those of you still trying. The trick does not over rides the A/C. It still comes on during defrost mode, but the A/C light now comes on and you can manually turn off the A/C in defrost mode.
there is no way to make the a/c turn off permanently, so when I turn to defrost i don't have to turn off a/c manually. There is no way to make it just not turn on or is it something programed into the ECU?
Even with this mod you have to turn off the a/c when you go to the last two settings on the vent dial. As far as I know no one's found a way to make the a/c-off the default.
