Does bigger piping increse or decrease the hp in 02 lx?
Anyone know if the horsepower in a lx 5-speed 02, decreases or increases when you make ur piping bigger for your exhaust. Because I already have a HKS rear section, but i barely noticed the difference since my SRI is so damn loud, and rear sections dont add much horsepower. So I thought I should make my piping bigger from the headers up to the rear. thanx...

a little bit bigger improves exaust flow, but you dont want to go too big, as that allows the exaust to cool down. cooler exaust is denser exaust/heavyier exaust. which makes your engine work harder to get it out of the pipe.
bigger does not necessarily mean better... the exhaust gases come out in pulses (feel the air coming out of the exhaust pipe and you'll know what i'm talking about) and in order for the gases to efficiently move out they need to be in a straight line one right after the other... if your piping is too big, the small pulses (FI will cause bigger pulses) will just ricochet off the walls back and forth and end up traveling a farther distance than they were meant to causing less hp...
well i guess you get the point and i got a little carried away...
Originally posted by CivicHX01 yea... 2 and 1/4 inches for the diameter of the piping is just about right... you don't want it too big unless you have forced induction
edit: make sure you get a resonator put in the piping or else your car will sound like a weed wacker
it wont sound like a weed wacker.....it only depends on the muffler
I thought about it today and what the hell are people using...i heard a del sol with an actual fart can...it sounded horrible...how is that different from all the other exhausts that sound deep and nice
if you just use piping from the cat all the way to the muffler it will be much louder resulting in the fart can noise at high rpm... if you put a resonator it will help quiet it down a bit and help to keep the deep sound at high rpm,
it shouldnt cause a loss in hp as long as the resonator's diameter in the inside is the same as the piping because resonators should not be restrictive in nature... (i.e. 2 1/4 resonator works with 2 1/4 piping)
also some mufflers use "glass packs" where the material inside is made of fiberglass which wears off over time and burns off... once this wears off, it starts sounding like crap... thats when it depends on the muffler... but HKS is quality so i doubt their mufflers are made with glass packs..
but also keep in mind that theres also a difference in power in the way the piping is bent... crush bent is more common but is a little more restirictive (try bending a straw then try to sip out of it, you'll know what i mean)
but mandrel bent keeps the same diameter the whole way through which is more efficient (like those straws that were made to be bent near the top), but mandrel bent is, of course, much more expensive...
so make sure you also decide if you want the piping mandrel or crush... there is a difference, but its minimal (maybe like 1/8-1 hp difference thats a pure guess)
