S.J. man dies in apparent street race
By Crystal Carreon
Mercury News
An 18-year-old San Jose man was killed late Friday night and four other people were injured in an apparent street racing accident in San Jose's Evergreen neighborhood, police said.
The victim's identity was unknown Friday night, but police said he was seen driving a newer-model, green Honda Civic northbound on Nieman Boulevard alongside a silver Mercury. Both cars appeared to be racing from a hilltop near Yerba Buena Road along Nieman Boulevard. They lost control north of Terrena Valley Drive, flipping over once, said San Jose police spokesman Steve Dixon.
The cars were traveling in excess of 70 mph on a 40 mph road, according to early police reports.
Police were called to the scene at 8:45 p.m. where they found both wrecked vehicles along an embankment on Nieman Boulevard. In the victim's Honda, police found two other teenage passengers alert and conscious. A teenage driver and passenger were found in the Mercury. All four were taken to area hospitals, but the nature of their injuries was not known.
Residents Marla Najam and Mita Dey shook their heads as they looked toward the accident scene. Nearly every weekend, they say, they can hear revved-up engines and screeching tires along Neiman Boulevard. Friday night, the friends were getting ready to watch a movie when they heard the familiar commotion outside their window.
``We heard the brakes slamming really hard, and I said, `Oh my gosh, they're doing the doughnuts again,' '' said Dey. ``Then we heard the police sirens and knew it was serious this time.''
Dey said last weekend the apparent racing awoke her and her husband at 2 a.m.
``It's almost every weekend,'' she said.
Najam said she has continually called police to alert them to the racing problem and said she discussed the issue among parents two weeks ago at a Parent Teacher Association meeting. The accident occurred near J.F. Smith Elementary School.
``This is a disaster waiting to happen,'' she said. ``And finally, on this Friday night, a life was lost.''
Dixon said officers who patrol the Evergreen neighborhood in East San Jose will ``pay more attention'' to street races along its wide residential streets. Most of the street racing activity, he said, occurs in Central and South San Jose.

Yea, i aggree on the no passengers thing, but from the sounds of it, they were out cruising around like they usually do and its a collective thing, if i was in that situation wether driver or passenger, its one of those situations where your going to race, last thing on your mind is stopping your car so that you can let a passenger out, and then to come all the way back to pick them up when your done. Usually if i have a passenger i make sure that they are cool with having a little fun in the car (most of the time this just involves practicing power slides and drifting in my local industrial area). I really havent had a true street race yet since i dont consider any of the supposed kills as fair. Smoking a celica gt or v6 cougar or svt focus just isnt really worth the time to care about, its just second nature now. Id rather drive smart and know ill be able to drive tomorrow than drive stupid and risk losing it all.
Word up!
I would rather drive safe and drive again instead of risking it all.
Sad bout the fellow Vic driver, anyone on the 7thgen?

Slightly on topic here.....but the only time I was ever pulled over in my Civic was in San Jose. I overshot my exit by a mile or two, and doubled back going about 80 to make up...I normally don't speed
Anyway, the cop pulls me over and boxes me in against this fence. Then he waits for backup. I don't know what the hell to think. He comes up to the window and asks me to pop the HOOD. I pop the trunk, thinking he wants to look for drugs or something, and he says "NO, the HOOD. Open your hood"
So I open the hood and the two cops stand there and stare at my engine for a full minute. I'm clueless for a while until I realize they are looking for racing parts. My engine was stock at the time, but I think they got the wrong idea from my 17" rims and tinted windows. I finally say "It's a stock engine, guys" and they say "Ok, you can close the hood"
Street racing is a huge problem in San Jose. I was just passing through in a stock honda on rims and they gave the the third degree, so you can imagine how close they're watching the folks with body kits and exausts.
lol so many stolen lives...and we still race nothing can stop us till it happen to us
so true, yet so sad i wish most of us would take everything to the tracks, instead of putting innocent lives at risk, sometimes i think to myself, "is it worth it?" racing someone for 20 seconds, just to prove if we can take the challenge or not.... that's my 2 cents
THERE IS A-LOT TO BE SAID ABOUT THE RUSH YOU GET THOUGH, SO I UNDERSTAND. MY FRIEND WAS KILLED ON NOV. 1ST ON HIS YAMAHA R1 DOING A 100mph WHEELIE. I WISH IT WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED, BUT AT THE SAME TIME IT CHECKED A-LOT OF PEOPLE AND MADE IT CLEAR THAT WE ARE NOT INDESTRUCTABLE. IT REALLY PUT THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE FOR MORE THEN A FEW. I HAVE NO QUESTION MY FRIEND WOULD HAVE WANTED THAT TO BE THE WAY HE DIED, BUT I KNOW HE WOULD HAVE PREFFERED TO MAKE IT PAST 21. REALITY SUCKS IN SO MANY WAYS, BUT THATS REALITY.......... True that. At least he went out the way he wanted to, even though it was careless
