thats kind of dumb considering AWD doesnt allow you to stop any better. What happens when you are going 40 and have to stop on the black ice that the FWD car is doing 15MPH on right in front of you?

Having owned AWD, RWD, and FWD vehicles my favorite will always be power to the rears for superior dynamics and steering feel.
Many claim AWD is king, for assurance I'd tend to agree but if you care about weight, cost, fuel consumption, or maintainance costs...... AWD can't compete with a good set of snows on FWD, it just can't.
As for going 40 when others were going 15, Id say you were driving too fast.
AWD may seem great in the snow, but once you rotate an AWD car past 30° or so kiss it goodbye cuz theres no way out.
