Old school GT...

Gets Schooled!

The day had gone along like any other…slow this week! I’d been at work since 11:30. Good thing I love my job. I’d like it more if I were working the sales desk at the Honda store of ours across the street…where I started in the car business 2 years ago…but I was still having fun, even if it was selling Nissan.

I was just tired and mellow tonight. I was actually looking forward to the drive home. I made the porter wash the Si, telling him if he misused my car bringing it in the bay I’d have his job…I love being boss

“Josh, don’t go revving the motor or punching it! You got me?”
“Yes boss…I can’t afford my dang car payment let alone having to fix that beast you drive!” (Said with a VERY heavy Texas drawl) **Real quick: Josh is a bull rider. He wears a HUGE belt buckle that glorifies his first “8 second ride”

Anyway, back to the story…..

I was on the local highway, I-480: 4 lanes @ 80mph is the local joke. And when I’m on 480, I’m almost SURE to get into it with someone! No, I never instigate…well, almost never and this night was no different…sort of.

I had a home made CD playing…a compilation of GWAR, Queensryche, Steelheart (don’t ask, I’m old) and other stuff. Not sure what was on, I had the volume low, mostly listening to the blower and watching my air/fuel’s dancing lights.

The start of an interesting evening started about 18 miles into my 45 mile trip home. There’s a merge of freeways, and I was heading back onto the long ‘ramp’ that lead 480 back into a lone freeway (it merges with I-271 for a few miles). I was behind some slow poke, I mean “54 in a 60” slow! And behind me was some fool in a Saturn. I knew it was a 4 door by the lights, nothing near new. He was close to me….too close!

As the car in front of me FINALLY moved over, I blew past, wanting to leave the Saturn in the dust. Well, the Saturn quickly became a DOT on the horizon. This is where the funny part starts. I see the Saturn coming up quick!

Then I felt it. I was being tempted by the devil…or my supercharger, or…something. I fought fiercely to regain control of myself. Sweat dripping down my brow, hands wringing the leather wrapped steering wheel of my might steed. Quickly I glanced, ahead, rear mirror, side mirror…tempted every second. The Saturn was on me, in the ‘slow’ lane, and by then he had to have had the car at it’s limit of speed! I let him pass…I was taking control of my subconscious and my body.

LOL! Good thing. The older SL1 was a POC! Yeah, because it was a Saturn, but also because it was just a POC! I made an “L” for loser with my pointer finger and thumb, out the side passenger window as he ‘blew’ past, and kept on my way…speed limit and all. I didn’t feel like wasting gas on a Saturn. A few miles later I passed the bastard stuck behind traffic and waved to him….

Now I was pumped. Don’t ask why, nothing happened, but I was looking for a fight….

I strolled along the freeway, passing the exit to my mom’s house, waving subconsciously. There’s a section of freeway just past that point where the new asphalt starts. Very nice! The road is so smooth, even my 45 series Falkens give nary a whimper from bumps that now don’t even exist. The tranquil feeling of a tight, and tightly wound, EP on a smooth road is almost comma inducing. Even though I was pumped, I felt at peace…at one with the blower…in perfect harmony with my surroundings.

I watched my air/fuel L.E.D. dance about. I played with the throttle, ‘lean’, ‘rich’…’stoich’ and again. Mesmerized by the beauty of the cockpit, the dancing lights, the smooth-as-cream ride…THEN, EP senses tingled…I looked up, quickly scanned, left, right, there!!

Up ahead was a FedEx truck, in the passing lane of course…bastard! But that wasn’t it. Aha! I saw it…Corvette. Corvette? Newer? Hmmm…still to far to see for sure…yeah, corvette. I stepped it up a bit…I WAS going to instigate this one!

As I headed around the FedEx truck, still in the wrong lane of course, I had to go right 2 lanes…traffic. I rounded past, past another car and then realized it WASN’T a vette! It was something I don’t see much in these parts. Once in a while as they’ve been gone for more than a few years. I see them in red, pearl white…and that’s about it! The car reminds me of an old boss, bless her thieving, lying, cheating soul…in other words, she was a B_ _ CH! She had another brand badged version of this car, the cheapy model…

It was a “GT”! a Mitsubishi 3000GT! I don’t know what year it was, but it was red and just ‘ok’ looking. It’s life was mostly likely long and hard, and it was a mitsu of course! Why I thought it looked like a new vette from far I don’t know, but it did.

I past the GT, not fast, just faster than him. I got in front of him and was a little ahead, when it started! He came up quick on me, his twin projector headlights glaring in my rear view mirror. I waited…quelling the urge to hammer it right then and there…I’d make him sweat a bit.

There were several cars in the middle left lane, so I thought to scoot over, let him pass, then get behind him and hug HIS bumper…I held off. As I passed the second car, the lane opened. I stuck to my plan and kept in the passing lane…TRYING to piss him off. He bit! He whipped from behind me…my EP sense took over. Before his driver headlight was out of my mirror, I was in fourth, mashing the pedal to the floor. He had to pass the car now next to me, so was heading over 2 lanes…too late! I pulled on him slowly at first, then split seconds later the blower started it’s song:

“WHIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR”…and I was off! The GT slowly faded…then as my rpm’s whipped skyward, he more quickly became but a distant memory. This only lasted for several thousand feet…just enough to let him know that the seemingly harmless ‘honda’ made mince meat of his 3000! I eased off the gas, down to just above legal.

By this time, the Si was now running at about 69mph, he finally caught up some distance later. As he passed, I didn’t look over, just slowly waved out the pass. Window (I like doing that if you haven’t noticed!) He hung around, just starboard and about 1.5 car lengths ahead. I laid low…staying the course. Then it was time to bed this issue, as if he hadn’t got the idea….

I downshifted…whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…and blew past, waving. By the time I got to the top of the next rise, he was but a scant dot on the dark concrete and asphalt horizon.

Was I ecstatic? Not necessarily. What I was was satisfied. Some fool in some pathetic example of a ‘sports car’ just got schooled!

Peace!
