Rep Power: 280 How does AWD work? Does it apply power to the rear wheels once your front wheels slip on a turn allowing you to poer on a turn? If this is the case, just because you have AWD I don't think your safer then someone with FWD.
My tips for winter driving include
========================
-Buy a set of good winter tires (Mine were a smaller size than my stock tires)
-Keep a shovel in the trunk in case you get stuck.
-Keep windshield wiper fluid full
-Keep a big distance between you and anybody with a BMW or SUV. These vehicle owners tend to be under impression they are invincible and winter weather doesn't affect them.
- Do not brake while turning, I like to give steady throttle on a turn.
- I drive slower in those conditions, and smooth. No sudden braking or abrupt
acceleration.
- If I do slip I stop applying throttle and keep steering in direction I want to go in and throttle once I've regained traction. I do not brake if I start slipping.

it seems to work well in the winter cause when u turn the front wheels slip, and the rear wheels sorta emit power so you start to fishtail or oversteer, therefore the rear wheels start to slip, and power goes back to the front wheels...

Rep Power: 287 when you find yourself sliding take yer foot off the gas but dont hit the breaks, gently turn into the slide and then try to correct, once yer car straightens out then try the breaks.... cranking the wheel and jacking on the breaks will just send you spinning..
best advice ever though.. find an snow filled empty parking lot and just drive like an idiot for a lil while.. sounds stupid but it will teach you at what point yer car will lose traction, how to correct and get yerself out of slides.. and its just so much fun.. but dont get yer rmps up too high cuz if you suddenly get traction you can snap an axle.. i learned that with my pos 86 mazda.. good thing it was only a $200 beater
also use yer floor mats to get traction when you get stuck somewhere.. if you dont wanna get yer car all snowy just throw a few trashbags in yer glove box so you can wrap them up when yer done...
kittylitter is also a great thing to have with you but not as good as rock salt..
DO NOT USE THAT BRUSH ON YER CAR.. all the sand and salt thats under the snow will scratch the crap out of everything.. just let yer car run for a few minutes then push it off by hand..
and when you wash yer car in the winter.. leave it running.. and just to play it safe try to have someone waiting in the car so they can push the doors open if they happen to freeze shut.. cuz you will rip yer handles off trying to pull them open...
why do i live in new england again?

very very nice infos, here..
BTW....for those who got Falken Ziex-512.......are they good in Snow?
i mean.....my falken is pratically brand new....however, i think it skids/slips quite alot of time.......that also means, the ABS on my ex keeps engaging every time i brake on 1~3" of snow....
is that normal?
i got hawk hps and powerslot for the brake setup.....

as for those falkens, they should do ok, but getting a set of tires for snow use would be the best option, or even just get 2 snow tires for the front

Rep Power: 0 Thanks for the info mang. I could really use it down here in MS because whenever I get up early during the winter time, the roads around here are frosted. So its sort of like driving on ice or snow if you wanna say. But once again, thanks for a few pointers. Hopefully it will help me later on.

Ya the snow is tuff on our 7th gennys. When it snowed up here in washington My car spun out and the rear tire hit a curb and the tire was indented. Cost me a grand to fix it. WATCH OUT FOR ICE!

Rep Power: 222 well, since this old thread was brought up, i would like to put my two cents in. int he snow, always drive under the speed limit, u may look like a dork and have people honking at u, but imagine how u would feel if your car is in the body shop. another thing, i suggest snow tires on all 4, reason being, for one, i work at a tire store, and i love more money, lol, but also, snow tires on the rear will help u keep from sliding on the a$$ end and will prevent accidental 360's. 4X4's are not god in the snow, they are only good for not spinning out when starting. i have a 4X4 and use it in extreme cases, which is almost all winter here. but anyways, drive safe, buy more snow tires, and watch out for everyone else, cuz they are all idiots.

Don't know if it was mentioned or not but if you drive an automatic shifting into neutral when you need to brake, like going downhill or coming to a stoplight makes a big difference. If you drive a stick like I do now it's obvious we can just hit the clutch.

i live in canada and winter driving is seriously all about common sense, reduce your speed accordingly when conditions dictact you to do so, its not rocket science, the roads are slick so you have to prepare for that, ice tires like the michellin x-ice as i have on my car, i mean dont get me wrong i like to do a bit of ebraking around the corners near my house but never near other cars or items that can become hazardous to my vehicles look haha. Just use your head, slow your speed, and do things almost twice as early as you normally would, slow down earlier, break for lights earlier, accelerate slower, dont be a hero because youve got a turbo and wanna be ballzy, save it for the summertime. safe driving
