random question..

hey guys, i know this is a civic forum.
but i was wondering since some of you are really good with cars.
if you guys could answer a question about my girl friends 2000 subaru impreza 2.5 rs.
so heres the deal, my girlfriend has a 2000 subaru impreza 2.5rs. the car has about 160k miles on it and nothing has really been wrong with the car, until recently i had my mechanic look at it to get inspected and the check engine light came on. he said it was nothing but some evap codes, pretty much nothing to worry about. but an irritating flaw, when the car is started it makes a weird squeeking noise, he told us it was the starter. most people thot it was a loose belt. any insight on what this could possibly be? and its not always that bad, sometimes when u start it, it wont even make the sound... so i really have no clue personally? any ideas would be nice. thanks for your time

Re: random question..

I'd check with the belts first? It doesn't really make sense to me why the starter would be squeeling but you can always get a second opinion from another mechanic.

Re: random question..

sounds like a belt isnt properly tightened, or is too tight. for the evap code, try new gas cap.

Re: random question..

gas cap gets old over time and does not seal as well, so gas vapors escape and the engine light can come on because there is less pressure.
