------------------------------------------------------------

Crap. Today is not a good day. If I had one, I would use my AK.

Mocked up the turbo mani and bits this morning. Things don't fit as well as I think they should. Going to have to cut about 4 inches out of the exhaust and weld a flange back on. This probably going to be a bitch with that double walled downpipe isn't it? I might be better off just going completely custom with a new Random or Magnaflow cat. Still thinking about that. Its the least of my issues.

So the WG does not clear my aftermarket hood. I have two configurations to put it in and both require "hood modifications". Wee. So I need some opinions. The way I see it I have four options.

****EDIT****

I went with Option 1 and you can see the results on Day 14 of the install (Pg 19)

****End of EDIT****

Option 1 - Horizontal mount WG

Pros - Provides a better place to hack into the hood from a symmetry standpoint. Less glassing involved . Should only result in asymmetrical wart on the hood. Clears AC.

Cons - Have to cut radiator support in half and get creative to reconnect it.

Option 2 - Vertical mount WG

Pros - Don't have to cut radiator support. Clears AC.

Cons - Serious glass work involved here. Symmetry of hood concavity has to have a lot of consideration. Asymmetrical "wart" would not look good in on the hood with this wastegate placement. Have to reglass the whole area.

Option 3 - Buy new hood

Pros - Don't have to fuck with anything except paint.

Cons - Expensive. Really expensive, especially shipping to the UK. Hard to find one with the correct fitment for my specific WG placement

Option 4 - Buy new mani and make new downpipe and dumptube.

Pros - Don't have to fuck with anything except re-wrapping the mani and DP. All I do is write a check.

Cons - Very expensive and easy way out.

So that's where I'm at folks. Needless to say I'm a little irritated this morning, but its part of the turbo gig. Nothing ever goes right. Let me know what you think about the options I've listed out here. Wee.

And I haven't even tried installing everything yet.

There's a lesson to be learned here folks. If you buy a kit, you don't have to go through all this crap.

Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying working on the car, but damn it, I want boost already!

Re: Gotta cut the hood. Give me some opinions.

Screw option 4. I would have buy a new mani ($500), get new flanges, O2 bungs and piping for the DP and DT ($100-150) and then pay for welding all over again. ($300). So I'd be another $1K into this thing and still not be able to go over 5 psi. I know I put it as an option, but it really isn't when you consider the cost. Plus I bit myself in the ass by making this thread. Anyone else who would have bought this would have run into the same problem.

But I'm impatient and this time zone thing is killing me. I've decided on Option 1. I don't think I'll have to get into the top side of the hood at all. I've cut radiator support and it looks like I'll be pretty much OK. I will have to cut out some of the underside of the hood, but only about 3" x 3" square. I'll reinforce that will new fiberglass. Here are some pics. I still have to clean up the grind job I did, but its going to work. Now to sort out the exhaust....

Re: Gotta cut the hood. Give me some opinions.

i was gonna suggest hood spacers it would only provide function as it pulls the hot air out of the enginebay.. i did it to mine to make my strut bar properly fit.

Re: Gotta cut the hood. Give me some opinions.

If it was in the back, then hood spacers would be an idea, however with the WG being in front like that, there's a much better chance of air catching it and popping the hood up.

I'm not too worried about the core support bit. I'm going to reinforce it later when I get the exhaust welded up. You see those cross members cut all the time. Its still connected and will be MIG'd up soon for more support.

Re: Gotta cut the hood. Give me some opinions.

Yeah Travis, I'm a little impatient when I comes to wrenching around on my car!

Hopefully I don't run into any problems when I start cutting on the hood. I'll start that Tuesday since my wife is going to Rome for a week and I can deadline the car while I get the exhaust and clearance issue taken care of.

Woohoo! Rep's working again. Although I just gave out all I could for the next 24 hours.

i was going to say option 1 anyway... sorry i got here so late. do u think the wastegate my clunk on the radiator support thing? like i guess when ur pulling wont the engine move back alittle and when u let off the throttle itll just clunk forward? or is that just me thinking paranoid.

Yeah, thats true. I dyno'd my car yesterday and the engine was just sloshing around in there. Really makes me want to dump the money into a torque damper. heads up foos.
