Re: Back in Biznass (Pg 87) - The Speedfoos' Turbo Thread!!
Well I worked on the DP for most of the day today. I suck at angles. I only had one other job to do, so I get to spend more time than I thought I would on it. I got the angle I needed here, and I was hoping to be able to get my A/C back. Yeah. Fat chance at that. There is just no way that I can see to be able to fit the compressor back in there. Oh well. So it stays out.
Tacka tacka.
My plastic mock-up kit makes getting the angle a lot easier. These little joints sure beat boiler's fancy blue welding wire! It comes with a bunch of different angled pieces as well, so I was able to use it to get my cuts close to where they needed to be. Geometry kicks my ass.
Here are some of my awesome welds. They don't have to be pretty. They just have to stick metal to other metal without leaking. I cleaned them up with a grinder after this shot. The penetration was really good and I made two passes on them. They'll get covered up with wrap anyway.
I'm just about finished with the DP. Here's where it sits now. I need to run a bead around one joint and then mate up the pie cut to put the flange on it and weld that up as well. That will be the hard part out of the way. I've already cut and welded a flange on the pre-cat pipe, and I also welded the flange on my 3" to 2-1/2" reducer pipe so it will just be a matter of measuring and cutting some straight pieces to attach to the cat tomorrow as well.
I also took care of one really irritating feature of the Dezod's old V2 downpipe. Chokers may be good for dogs and goth girls, but not DPs. This little gem was on the end of my downpipe. I cut it off. Yes, that's a 3" pipe it's sitting inside of. That should make things be better until my O2 bungs get in and I can use this DP.
And that's it for tonight. I worked on cars for 10 hours today and didn't eat anything. I gotta get some food. Free beer to whomever cleans my garage for me tonight!

Clint, Those welds look pretty darn good! One suggestion, when you make the last pass, use a "U" pattern. Staring on left side, go down, across and then up; then down, across and up.. Make the pattern wider than your seam by 3/32" on both sides.
Practice on a flat piece and watch how nice of a weld you can make, Will be make the joint a lot stonger and less chance of a pin hole leak.

Old dude with his first post sounds like he has some wisdom to share
Not that I know anything about welding.

Posted some ideas in your thread Tony. I'll check back later once you're awake. But yeah folks, my whole family watches this thread! My Dad has been helping me troubleshoot and basically taught me to weld over the phone. I'm glad he was able to join the site.
Sigh.........
So anyway, I'm heading back out to the garage as soon as I make a pot of coffee. Gonna clean it up first and then finish things up.

Re: Back in Biznass (Pg 87) - The Speedfoos' Turbo Thread!!
Yep.
Anyway. I finished the DP today. I've got to wait for my O2 bungs to arrive before I can really finish the rest and install it. For some reason they're still not here. Once they arrive, it will just be a matter of putting them on the DP and exhaust, connecting the cat up and that's it. Should be a total of three welds, plus the O2 bungs and the hanger.
Oh and I've gotta run the wastegate dumptube. I'm thinking about just running an open dump on it but exiting to the bottom of the car. We'll see.
Anyway here are the pics. I painted it because the flanges are mild steel and I don't want them to rust. Tubing is stainless.

Clint are you going to have a flex pipe on the exhaust to absorb vibration?
I highly suggest you do.

Thanks Tony and Richard. It's not too hard once you play with the MIG stinger a few times. I'm using a really shitty welder and the welds are still coming out halfway decent. Good advice on the U-pattern Dad.
