Doubt very seriously its a bearing man. I'm not familiar enough with your setup to have any idea. It could very well be a pinhole leak in one of your coolant lines somewhere. The thermostat doesn't open up until the engine reaches 170, therefore there is nothing circulating before then

take a long screw driver and put your eat on the end of it dude lol, i'd start under the thermostat spot (on the top of the engine), stick the screw driver down under and put your ear on it, kinda like a stethescope... maybe its coming from there? that'd be my first guess, since all the coolant goes in there for the most part

You know Andy, that's a really good point about the thermostat. I need some coffee to think through the ramifications of that. Good idea on the stethoscope booba. Be a better way to pinpoint it. Tom, it gets more continuous the warmer the car is. It's semi-intermittment after I start it once it's been sitting for like 10 minutes after the drive home from work (9 miles), but you heard in the vid, that it was pretty constant there. That's about the only change to it. I'll check higher RPM idle revs in the parking lot this morning at work.

Re: Holy crap, he put it on a dyno! - (Vid on Pg. 136) - The Speedfoos' Turbo Thread!

OK, drove it to work today and paid attention to the noises. After 3.5 miles - full operating temp - no noise. I go one more mile (to next stop sign) and I have the squeal at idle.

So I stick my head out the window and listen to when the noise quits. It stops above 2.5K in any gear under load, although in 1st it's still faintly audible until about 2.8K. When idling it stops the noise at about the same revs as in first when in motion.

Sounds clutch-related to me. Whether it's pilot or throwout bearing I don't know, my guess is pilot bearing though since the noise does not change when shifting through the gears.

I have no clutch slippage at all which is good. I'm still going to pull the pan and have a looksee, but I can drive it like this until I feel like buying a new clutch. I haven't decided what I want yet anyway.

This potentially good news. I've back down to WG PSI (about 7.5), just to be on the safe side though.

Re: Holy crap, he put it on a dyno! - (Vid on Pg. 136) - The Speedfoos' Turbo Thread!

Kinda sounds like what happened with my stage 3 comp clutch! Blew my tranny out, marble noise on turns, & that same loud squeal....mine was only related to clutch input. However both the noises sound the same. However....my thought is a bearing in the transmission. The pilot bearing does not turn nor the throw out. The noise sounds rotational in nature. Take a long pry bar and drop it right on the top of the bell of the transmission. Put ur ear on the end, I bet the noise is right there internally in the transmission.

My transmission had an intermittent knocking noise in that same spot the last week it was in!

Also, I had one 96 civic that came into the shop with that same noise. It sounded like a really bad belt slip. It was almost all the time until around 5-6k....The noise was definitely internal in the transmission. The customer op'd for a cheaper replacement than a rebuild. Problem fixed!

Just my two cents.....are transmissions are weak!

Yeah, weaksauce transmissions FTL. I hope it's not a tranny bearing. I know absolutely fuckall about transmissions. It's coming off this weekend though and I'll see what happens. The car is cooled down now so it won't make the noise. Will have to catch it tomorrow.

Re: Holy crap, he put it on a dyno! - (Vid on Pg. 136) - The Speedfoos' Turbo Thread!

Actually.....Clint....our transmission are pretty easy but not without the right equipment. I wouldn't even try to do the transmission on my back. You have to drop the subframe. That is something you really need to keep in alignment. I've never seen anyone do one of ours on there back 2 feet off the ground. Not alot of room to play with! You also need an engine brace for the top to hold the motor!

I do my own but I have access to all this at my shop! Good luck man! I have extra transmission if you wanna try you're hand at rebuilding. It's tedious work but it's not hard at all!

Re: Holy crap, he put it on a dyno! - (Vid on Pg. 136) - The Speedfoos' Turbo Thread!

Yeah, everything is easy if you have the right tools! And I won't be using power tools either Rufus. Gonna stock up on beer and band-aids for when it's done.

I'm actually going to give dropping the subframe a whirl in my garage on jackstands this weekend. Engine brace can be done with some chain going to a rafter in garage. I'm going to measure the tranny height and see if I can get the car high enough for it to come out before I do it though. I've pulled the tranny in the shop before so I'll just working with limited clearance this time. We'll see. I'm more brave than I am smart sometimes! If you hang on to that extra tranny until this fall when I move back to the states, I'll definitely buy it from you.

I’ve done transmissions, clutches, engine replacements and everything in my garage on jack stands. Its not hard to all to get the sub-frame lined up you just need to mark it before you take it off. All with NO power tools.
