Re: Install Day 14.825 (Pg 29) Exhaust is Tacked - Speedfoos' Turbo Install

No I am officially not starting the car. Or unofficially either. But here's....

Install Day 15

I spent four hours fucking with the exhaust. Four of them. 240 minutes. It's either an inch too long, or the orientation is off. I made it fit. Enough whining, on to the pics.

So here it is at last. 3.5 weeks after I dropped it off. I think it took him all of 45 minutes to do. Needless to say I'll be buying a cheap little 220 volt MIG welder very soon so I don't have to rely on someone else for exhaust work.

It's time for a good old-fashioned lynchin'!

But since it's "stainless" steel, I figure I had better spray it down with some high-temp paint and then use up the rest of my wrap. That way it doesn't rust as quickly as it normally would.

I didn't have as much wrap left as I thought. But here's another lesson. 50 feet of 1-inch exhaust wrap is enough to wrap a log mani, downpipe, and about 15 inches of exhaust pipe. Good things to know.

Now all that was the easy stuff. Fitting it to the car was the hard part. I was able to bolt everything up just fine, but it sagged worse than a 65-year old porn star with a latex allergy. So I braided up some lock wire and made some ghetto exhaust hangers. I think if I cut an inch out of the pre-cat pipe just before the flange, it would fit a lot better, but I'm not going to mess with it now. My next mod is going to be a new exhaust, it will just happen a lot sooner than I intended.

Here is before I "coaxed" it into the right place. Hangin' a bit low.

I grabbed my jack, and moved everything up to where I wanted it to be and then wired it into place. It'll do for 6 months or so until I can make a new exhaust setup. I painted the pipe and the wire too so it doesn't rust as fast either. It's still wet in these pics.

Unfortunately it left a sizable gap in the front of the DP to UP flange transition. Fortunately there's a donut gasket in there to compensate for that, and even better, I had a big tube of exhaust putty. Slather, slather, slather and there should be no leaks.

So, the exhaust is installed. Am I happy with it? No. But it will work for now until I make my new setup. There isn't anywhere around here that I can get a new setup made, unfortunately. Any time you say, "Can you make a custom blah, blah", most Brits' eyes glaze over and they respond with, "Can't do that, mate." Very frustrating. I wish I was back in the states where I could walk in to a corner muffler shop and say, "I want 3" pipe to go from here to here and it needs to go over this and between that," hand them a few hundred backs and come back in two hours. Oh well.

That's it until tomorrow, when I just know the belt is sitting in my PO box!

Re: Install Day 15 (Pg 31) Exhaust is Installed - Speedfoos' Turbo Install

Yeah, tell me about it Adam. I don't know that really anything has gone as planned with this build.

I'm pricing welders right now, but will probably just wait until I get back from deployment later next year. The exhaust just has to last 4 months until I leave, then the car gets parked for 3 months until I get back. As long as it doesn't vibrate the car, I'm fine with it for now. Unless I can find one locally for like $100, I'll just wait.

I'm gonna pop on some tunes, go to a happy place, and make your sig now.

Well I haven't beat your 'record' yet Logic, but if this Autozone fiasco keeps I know I will.

Listen Steve, Mr. I'm-too-much-of-a-pussy-to-sleeve-an-engine-using-a-CO2-cartridge-and-my-oven-so-I-had-to-have-Chris-do-it. I don't want to hear any lip out of you.

My radiator elbow arrived today (finally) so I'm off to fit that now!

Re: Install Day 15 (Pg 31) Exhaust is Installed - Speedfoos' Turbo Install

FUCKING AUTOZONE!!!!!!!!

I just called them up and the bastard lied to me last week. My order still hadn't shipped. I can't fucking believe this! Absolutely the worst experience ever. The guy had no idea what was going on with my order, I couldn't even track it online. They just lost a customer.

I ordered the belt from Summit which is what I should have done in the first place. I paid $33 to ship it Express Mail so it will get here by Friday. What a fucking nightmare.

I'm going out to the garage now. Make me nuts!

Re: Install Day 15 (Pg 31) Exhaust is Installed - Speedfoos' Turbo Install

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Install Day 16

This part of the "build" actually went smooth. I'm kind of shocked that I didn't run into any problems. I mean for Christ's sake, it was just a radiator elbow, but still, the simplest things have been going wrong lately.

Anyhow the elbow and hose joiner arrived today and I put them on the car.

End of update.

Well, that wouldn't be much fun now would it?

OK, here's some verbage about what I did. It took me about an hour and a half for the whole thing. I had to trim about an inch off each leg of the elbow so it wouldn't pinch on the charge pipe or intake tube and it worked out pretty decent.

The hose was the stock 28mm ID and the joiner was 32mm. My OBX hose flexed just fine to fit the joiner, but the elbow was a bitch. I only ended up getting the joiner into the elbow about an inch, but that should be fine. I don't know if it's good or bad that the main hose (the OBX) flexed easier or not.

Anyway, it still pinches a very little bit on the charge pipe, but once the system is under pressure, it should be fine. I'll upgrade to the metal flex hoses at a later date. I have more important things to worry about and this will work in the meantime.

The bottom elbow - nothing funny about it:

And a view from the top. It rests against the fan, but that's why the fan has a guard on it.

Now I'm going to share a trade secret with everyone. This mod is GUARANTEED to add at least 15whp, and that's dyno proven. I know what you're thinking, " 'foos is so full of shit, I can smell him all the way from England." Well it's the first Tuesday of the month and that means it was Bath Day, so we know that isn't true.

Are you sure you're ready for this?

Don't share this outside the forum.

Here it is.

That's right. Twice-filtered anti-freeze. This shit is the bomb. Now you have to use Bounty Pick-a-Size as a filter or it just doesn't work right. I'm telling you, my car pert near jumped off the jack stands, and it's not even running. That's how good this mod is.

I've got some property I'm selling as well. PM me for details.....

OK, so you didn't fall for it. Your mom must have drowned all the stupid kids too.

I realized I didn't clean the bucket that I drained my clean anti-freeze into and didn't want to chance putting it back into the radiator all crappified. Good thing I filtered it. This what was suspended in the fluid after the first bottle was emptied.

So there it is. I'm going to change out the WG spring and injectors tomorrow. The stock clips will work on the SRT-4 injectors for now, but Paul@dezod has some stock clips coming my way! Plus the infamous belt should be here Friday at the latest!
