Those 2 statements are sort of contradictory. A decent economy car like a Civic or Corolla 1998+ will run around $7,000 in decent shape and decent mileage.
Around 5k you can prolyl get like a 94-96 Civic with high mileage and who knows what shape..
Other cars you listed like Mazda you can find for about $5k being 1998+ but they will be junk and will end up costing much more then 5k.
When I worked at a car dealership I noticed a certain trend in car shopping. For normal daily driving cars you either want to buy a car that is less then $2,000 or more then $7,000 because everything in between is most likely junk. If you buy a cheap 2k$ beater then you invest a thousand or two into it and you got it running good and safe so you got yourself a decent car for about 3k. Above $7k dollars are all decent cars so no problem there.
However, that gap between the 2k-7k cars is where the junk is at most of the time..... these days you cannot find a decent car for 5 grand..... you get a car for 5 grand and it will most likely be at a point where everythign is breaking non stop so you will have to invest a coupel thousnad into it on repairs. So the 5k car will cost you about 7k-8k and you're sitll stuck with a POS.
This is pretty general but this is what I learned form working at a used car dealership. Hope it helps.
