How many of you got tires locally?

The debate right now is to buy rims and tires as a package and get free shipping, or to just order the rims, pay the shipping and get the tires from a local place like Discount Tire so I can get the "warranty" or whatever its called... you know, the nail in the tire, free rotation and balancing, etc.... plan that goes with the tires when you buy them. Or take the free shipping, hope I never get a nail in a tire and they don't need to be balanced very often. I've never had 17's before (15's are the biggest rim on any car my family has) so I don't know if the bigger rim and thinner tire is more sensitive to perfect balance or not.
How many of you guys did get your tires somewhere near your house to get the service plan on them?
Basically, it's about $60-80 to ship the rims, or free with tires and the unknown expense in balancing them and road hazard repair.

i bought from discount tire for basically 3 reasons.
1. They offer that warranty thing so if one of my tires pop, they replace it for free
2. They will rotate my tires for free
3. I didn't have to wait for my tires
Hope this helps

I drove past about 25 other dealers when I finally found one who was ultra careful mounting custom rims (whether he sold them or not). He had the installer put socks on the jaws that grip the rims to avoid any scratches and made sure they used plenty of lubricant too (sounds more like a whorehouse, doesn't it ).

Anyway, the point is...the price I paid included a lifetime balance & rotation from this independent dealer even though I had gotten the Eagle F1's from the Tire Rack, so most local places usually have that type of deal. I have never been that concerned about getting a tire that would meet the criteria of having to go back to the mail order/online seller. The one nail hole that I DID get in a 16" Dunlop, I just paid to have it plugged and kept on rolling.

My wheels came 3,000 miles away from southern California to central Vermont. One of my rims had a hole in it and I had to send it back, it only cost $35. The shipping was free on the whole set to begin with so it was'nt that bad. I got them from The Wheel Warehouse.

i got mine as a set from CB Wheels. there are no discount tire stores around me, the only real options i have is to go to firestone and get bridgestones or go to sears and get falkens. and thats exactly what i think im gonna do when i need to replace tires.

some online places give you a warrantee also, you just might have to pay for it. and then theres the hassle of sending the wheels back to get replaced. theres definite benefits of doing it locally, if you can, but i had no problems w/ cb wheels. they installed my tires and balanced my wheels perfectly...no damage what so ever.

AR will become famous soon enough
boilmaker i am thinking of doing the same thing... theres a "just tires" in my neighborhood and they have the same thing youre talking about. the reason though i may be buying rims online is cause theyre cheaper than buying them from honda (si wheels -- but i am still not sure yet). and i mean there are like 2 locations not far at all from my house so i figure i cant loose.
