Clean and adjust rear brakes for 2005 Civic sedan?

I stopped by the dealer for an oil change and was recommended by the service advisor that the rear brakes need to be cleaned and adjusted. Does the 2005 Civic have self adjusting brakes? Is it essential to have the rear brakes cleaned and adjusted?

i had mine done for $50 at a shop. they just take it apart and lube the parking brake cable. only reason i did it was the cable squeaked every time i pulled it. there is nothing really to adjust if the brakes are still good. i have 40% left of the original drum and shoe, and im at 85k miles to give you an idea.

Just take them apart, blow out the dust, make sure you dont inhale any and lube up the moving parts (not the pad).

is any kind of lube ok? does it create any sort of noises if it needs to be lube? because when i brake, it squeels real loud and goes away after a few brakes...

It's brake dust. Take the drum off, spray it down with brake cleaner adjust the star adjuster and your done.

Re: Clean and adjust rear brakes for 2005 Civic sedan?

the squeaking noise coming from the rear is cause the brake shoes have been constantly rubbing on the backing plate of the drums for probablly 60k miles, they usually ONLY squeak when you release the brake, just put some brake lube between the backing plate and shoes by prying the shoes up just a little, you can tell where to put the lube by where the rust is... after you cleaned out the brake dust

while youre in there turn the little star wheel a few clicks, about 4 or so swipes with a flat screw driver will work
