Question Last Friday My Fuel Gauge Screw UP! But now it seem working? What the deal?

Hi, I am from Canada. and have a 2003 1.7 Acura EL.. which is same as US 1.7 Civic with Leather Seat...

On Last Friday, I was sitting at a red light! So I have nothing to do but watching the Gauges on the car... At that time I have "HALF TANK" of gas... and all the sudden... my fuel gauge DROP to NOTHING! and the GAS LIGHT came on!!! I go what the hell!.. A 1/2 Tank to Nothing is just 2 second!!!! so Right away I pull into a gas station.. I try to turn off the car and turn it back on! see if it some how reset itself.... but Nothing help...

Finally I top up my tank... only 20L.. .which isn't right, usually it take 42Liters to fill up the tank! So I start the car... and the GAUGE read "FULL" and it to seem working so far! I now still have 3/4 tank full... Anyhow, I call one dealer near where I live, and the person on the phone say, it could just be bubbles on the systems that cause the float on the gas tank temporary reading it empty! I goes NO WAY!... so I bring it in to the dealer anyway... and the tech tell me he couldn't find anythings wrong... But he did find my Gauge is little stickly!! So he order it! "INCLUDING THE SPEED and TEMP GAUAGE" the hold damn thing!!! and it is on BACK ORDER!! so it could take months to get here!

I talk to him that it could be the fuel sender unit because I saw lot of problems in this forum about it! And he say he know that is a recall on 01/02 but not my 2003!! and he say he will replace the gauges first and see if this help... It is kind of funny, why don't they just replace the sending unit which is cheaper!

I have to see if it happen again when it get to half tank... If it does I will bring it right back where he could see what happen to it!

This is a pic of my Acura EL

those are not the fog lights, they're the turn signals.

Yea, those are the Aero Package... come with the lips skirts and the spoiler at the back... come with only 3 color, Silver, Blue and Black....... which I don't really like it up in Canada... I took that picture when I first brough my car home on December... now it already have many rock chips on them.. because Canada Weather is like hell this winter!

And the car is so low after the skird... I already screached the bottom a couple of time... and when it come to snow day with 2 to 3 feet of snow on the ground... you know what happen....

Those are turn signals under the bumper.... The other on the head lamp just a marker light... They only turn on when you turn on the headlight... or you push the remote to arm or disarm your car...

I have the same freakin problem. While i was waiting for my brother to come in my car all of a sudden the gas light comes on. And once when it was below E i mean below E i go fill the gas up it filled 10 gallons. Dont civics have like a 13 gallon tank. The gauge is really screwed up on these cars.

Yea... I have no problem this week... My Fuel Gauge is read 1/4 left on my fuel tank... I fuel up to 32 liters... and it is a 50 liters tank... so 1/4 I should need 37 liters to fuel up.. only 5 liters give or take... which isn't bad...

But not like 1/2 tank to nothing in 2 second! I think more electronics the more problem you going to get! I am thinking getting extended warranty on this car! I got the car only 5 months, I already have my SPRING COIL change, one PowerLock Change, my HeadLight Change... now the fuel Gauge!

If you interested, I could tell you what I have gone through with this car! I pick up this car on November 28, 2002.. New! After about 2 weeks, My Headlight have water going in!! I bring it in they change the lens on my headlight!... Then a few week past, I heard some "KNOCKING" noise when I turn! I bring it back, they say the have to change my SPRING FRONT COIL... "BACK ORDER!" from Japan... waited for about a month to arrive! Then one of my POWER LOCK were busted! It wound't unlock... well.. sometimes it does; sometimes it doesn't!

Now is this fuel gauge! "BACK ORDER AGAIN"... Man! I used to drive a 2000 Pontaic Sunfire... And I through that is a JUNK... And I through Acura or Honda will be better... then again! What the hell wrong with just buying a new car and drive and don't have to worry about anything but oil change???

And the most funny things are, my car is build in Canada... it is about 50 KM, North of Toronto... (Where I live)... How the hell everytimes I have a problem, the part always in "BACK ORDER"??? If this car is build in just 50 KM North of where I live... how could it be "BACK ORDER"?? What are those guy doing up there?? Turn off the Assembly line and wait for parts from Japan???

By the way, My Gauge is on Back Order now... I was wondering, once they change my guage... how would they able to put my mileage back on to the new gauge?? I know it is Digital... do they just somehow put it on a computer and set it?

A little Update!

It is 2 months seem my fuel gauge start screwing up... and I like to give you guys a little update!

First, they have change my Gauges... now my Gauges read "0" on the mileage! Which I don't mind! "IT IS A NEW CAR AGAIN!" But the problems still here! So I bring it back... finially they agree to change the "fuel sending" unit for me! Which I have to wait again on back order....

Finally it came last week... So I bring my car in, and they loan me a loaner car... another 2003 Acura EL! The funny parts are... the loaner car HAVE THE SAME problem on the fuel gauges as my car!

So when I bring my loaner car back, and pick up my car... I talked to one of the manager of the services area... His answer, Oh Yea! He said, he got "4" Acura EL Loaner have the same problems!!! He said it is the 2003 Acura EL... they all like that!

Great! No wondering when I complaint, he was willing to change my Gauages and my Fuel Sending Unit with no questions ask... It seems this is a very common problems... and Honda know it! The things are, why don't they do a recall on it!

Anyway, my fuel guages seem to work fine now after they change my "sending Unit". Just hope it stay that way....
