2nd gear pops out

I have no idea what the problem is. It usually happends when my engine is still cold, but has also happened after driving a while. I shift into second, engage gear, drive around a little bit, take my foot off the gas, but stay in gear. When i give it some gas again, it pops out, grindes, and the actuall shift knob physically moves. Doesn't happen all the time, and their is no real pattern to it. It just pops out randomly. mine does this too! I HATE MY CAR I THINK I JUST HAVE A LEMON! Honda says that it was because of my ACT clutch but it did it before it and still does it after it to!

It's doing this because the "dog teeth" in your transmission aren't staying meshed like they should, now unless you gring your gears like a mofo, this shouldn't be happening ever, so I'd take it to the dealership and show them, just make sure you know how to reproduce it, because they won't tear apart your transmission unless you can prove something is wrong with it.

This is a known problem with the 2001 civics, not sure about the rest of the 7th gens. I had the same problem on mine. There is a technical service bulletin concerning this. The dealer should fix it.

Link to TSB. TSB # 01-081.

see i think im a pretty good driver. i rarely race and dont drive like a maniac too much. but i cant reproduce it cause it only happens once in a while and there is no pattern to it. god dam, this is a huge pain in the ass

mine is a 2002, would that change anything about the recall?

It's probably a similar problem to the 01's the bushings were bad or something.

I find that my 2002 has the same problems that my 2001 had - they just take longer to surface in the '02.

If anyone has these kinds of problems with an 02, I would encourage you to tell your dealer -- because Honda will only issue a TSB for the 02s if enough people report these problems to the dealers.

I have an 02 5-speed, and 2nd gear is very hard to shift into, but the dealer can't reproduce it and doesn't care about any TSB that applies to an 01. I would bet that some of the 02s will develop the same problem,s as the 01s, but Honda will only do something about this if everyone reports it.

I thought that whenever you took your foot completely off the throttle, when you wanted to get back on the gas in the same gear that you had to clutch? In my '02 EX if I don't clutch when doing this the car jerks back and forth for a second or two.. which totally feels wrong and that i'm putting some huge strains on the transmission / clutch .. do you actually have to do this? (even if you don't, i'm not going to stop..cuz it's kinda uncomfortable if i don't..)

Anyways my point is that if you don't use the clutch when you get back on the gas that maybe over time something wore out, and whatever it was can't take it anymore, so it pops out of gear?

btw..i know very little about cars..i'm just using what i've heard / tried..

Nah you should be able to take your foot off the gas and then back on as long as your in that gears rpm range. If you feather it smoothly enough you wont jerk back and forth or need to clutch it.

yeh u can take it on and off the gas while staying in gear, it is just that in second gear, the car has enough torque to jerk the car around a bit, u just gotta do it smoothly, try it in fifth gear doing 120k, u dont even feel it.
everytime u press and release the cluctch it slowly wears it out

yeh i think i might wait until the spring to bring it in, maybe it will vanish on its own (wishful thinking)
but if they give me bullshit about warrenties it will cost enough to repair it.

can they put any of this on an intake/exhaust?

A dealer might accept that TSB for a 2002, which is what scarpones has, but its never worked for me. They always point to the top of the TSB where is says:
Applies To: 2001 Civic 2-door -From 1HGEM....1LOO0001 thru 1HGEM....1LO81628 9, 2001
2001 Civic 4-door -From 1HGES....1LOO0001 thru 1HGES....1LO55439
2001 Civic 4-door -From 2HGES....1H500001 thru 2HGES....1H582767

None of those are for a 2002. But like I said earlier, if enough people with 2002s report these problems Honda might do the right thing and issue a new TSB.

Yeah, I went to the dealer. It happens on my car when it is cold or when I hit a bump while making a turn(ie: uneven pavement). Dealer said that even if there is a TSB, they can't do anything until it happens to them while on a test drive. Sure enough, the dude drove it and it didn't happen. They told me "THEY WILL" definitely fix it for me before my car hits 35,999. Warranty does cover it. He said hopefully by then, 2nd gear will pop out more often for them to see it actually happening.
