i got a 2k2 civic si/ex coupe auto. when i'm going at a good speed around 60km and i brake to a stop, as it downshifts maybe into gear 1 i don't really know, i get a sudden kick in the engine like an engine breaking at high revs for a sec. does this happen to anyone else? normal? anything. thanks. Had the same problem on a different car. Resetting the ECU fixed it. If that doesn't help, you might have a broken spring on the 1-2 accumulator in the transmission. Take it in for service.

the civic has a grade logic controller in it. if your going downhill even slightly and are applying the brake, it will automatically downshift for you. it does it everytime on my car coming home from school. the road is barely on an incline, but its enough to trip the sensor.

I think his problem is that it is downshifting too early, cause a hard engine brake.
