04 civic ex manual transmission 5 speed
Hey everyone Can anyone please help?
I just got done a timing belt job, and while doing that had to replace
my oil pan due to it having a leak from rust...
I now have a leak coming out of the transmission, right where oil pan
and tranny come together, behind the plate there.
I think its a coincidence? Unless my repair of the pan, could have done
something.
Anyone ever deal with a manual tranny leaking here? I have attatched a
couple of pics.
Prior to this I was occasionally hearing tranny noise when clutch was out and
say it was in neutral but never a leak.
On the way back tonight I also noticed a thump thump thump, like in the
axle drive, I'm thinking its so low on tranny fluid now, its affecting transmission.
Anyone ever worked on there manual tranny? THANKS for any help

Re: Possible transmission leak 04 civic ex
you sure its the tranny leaking and not engine oil?
that a pretty common seal to leak on engines with high mileage,
that is assuming you installed the oil pan correctly,
where was your oil pump leaking?.....you sure it wasnt your oil pump leaking?

I thought that at first too
but checked engine oil and it is still full.
Replaced gasket on oil pump and reinstalled that and that seems ok too,
I left out yesterday thinking this oil leak had resolved itself, then noticed half way
back that it was all over passenger side underneath
Then all of a sudden I started to feel a vibration thru steering wheel almost like a
tie rod was bad, milked it home and noticed a lot of oil coming out there
so assumed it was tranny losing fluid?
Do you know if the oil pan gasket where oil pan goes together on tranny side has anything to do with keeping the transmission fluid in?
I'm assuming this is coincidental but will look more into exact leak spot

Most likely the oil pan is leaking from corners at location nearest the transmission.
Did you use an OEM gasket or aftermarket (Felpro)?
Did you use Hondabond or RTV sealant on the inside corners of oil pan per service manual?
Did you use a torque wrench and torque pan bolts/nuts to spec?
Is the gasket flat or round and moulded?
Other possibility may be the rear main seal. However, if there wasn't a leak before in that area and then leaks after oil pan gasket replacement it points to new gasket as main suspect. Transmission gear oil is usually heavier and with a stronger smell than motor oil however, some owners use 30w motor oil in transmission.
