Rep Power: 0 Hello. Here is the question for all you transmission specialists. My lovely 2005 Civic DX is still running, but clutch is about to die, tranny makes all kinds of noises too - ISB is bad I guess. Anyhow, I will change the clutch and tranny soon, but I really would like to get a tranny with longer gears, something like US Civic HX tranny. Here in Canada we don't have HX Civics, but we do have Coupes with manual transmissions. Local junk yard has lots of them, I can pull out tranny for $100 CAD, I just don't know which model has longer gears, if any. Guys, if you have any info on Canadian version of Civic HX - please share your knowledge.
Thank you.
Soon I will replace clutch and transmission on my 05 Civic DX, trying to find Canadian version of Civic HX ( longer gears ) . Local junk yard is full of Civics, I just don't know which one has the same tranny as USDM Civic HX.
Any info appreciated!
Thank you!

Posts merged. Please don't start more threads on the same subject.
I took a quick look and ran the part number for the ring gear for a USA HX in a Canadian parts catalog, it doesn't exist in the Canadian database apparently.
Unless you can get parts shipped to up there from the US, you're probably best off to use a DX/LX manual trans (D17A1 engine).
Check? www.car-part.com
EX has the different trans in the USA (USA EX = Canadian Si)
IIRC the LX/DX D17A1 trans gives a lower engine RPM for a given road speed, than the trans from a D17A2 VTEC.

Thank you for reply ezone! Do you know which parts ( part numbers ) I will need to change the final drive? Will HX final drive fit into DX tranny?
Taking tranny apart not a big deal, but I have no idea where to get parts for this project..
Do you know which tranny was used on Acura EL?
Thank you.

Acura El will have the D17A2 (Vtec) tranny. I put one of those in my old car (I had a bad ISB) instead of another D17A1 (non-vtec) tranny. It made the car feel quicker with the shorter gears.
But you already have that longer gear trans and you're trying to find an even longer one?
Not sure if you'll be able to find an HX up here, maybe in cities near the border, or even hop across the border and buy an HX trans down there

Thank you Colin42! What's your RPMs at 100kmh? I get around 3200rpm at 100kmh, which seem a bit too high, my commuting involves a lot of highway driving, that's why I want to install longer gears, probably will benefit from it. My tranny is noisy, will need to get another one anyways, so why not get a longer geared one? ) I was hoping that there is Canadian version of HX, but apparently there is none..
Thank you.
Thank you.

You're at 3200 at only 100k/hr? Maybe someone swapped in the shorter gear trans before you bought it? I wrote that car off in December, I think around 120 it would sit at about 3400. The car I have now is an 05 automatic, at 100 I know I'm under 3000, maybe like 2900. At 120 I think its around 3200. The trans should have a little vin plate attached to it. See if it matches your car's vin? How close are you to the border?

See, things get complicated when you feel sentimental about your old car, I just need to get a new car, that would fix all the problems at once )

I'd check with the yards closest to you on the american side and see if they have any, then you can fix it before your trip. For the clutch I used an exceedy kit, worked awesome. My flywheel looked fine so I just cleaned it with brake clean.
And as long as the body on your car is pretty good, I'd just keep it. New cars have too much computer bs for me.

You would need a lot of trans parts to make a swap (ring gear + hardware, countershaft, corresponding gears for that shaft setup, shim selection for adjustment and setup, etc.) and you would have to get them bought and shipped from the USA...... I don't see this being cost effective unless you have an HX trans to get the parts from, because the parts brand new would probably cost far more than a used trans of the variety you are looking for.

That's true, too much trouble for one little old car.. I guess for now I will install Exceedy Clutch and tranny with lowest mileage they have at the junk yard. That's about it for now.
Thank you ezone.

If you weren't afraid to dive in and do a final drive changeover, why not dive in and replace the input shaft bearings on your original trans?
A quick look at the parts were...about USD 300 for the ring gear and bolts, another 300+ for the countershaft, about 100 per gear, it was adding up to insane awful damn quick.
