It was more the 01-03s that failed, but frequent fluid changes are a good idea with the auto trannys.

Thanks for reply heard the 2004 also has problems. Changing transmission fluid this week might go as far as having hole drilled in tork converter because with basic change only get 60-70 of old fluid.

Quit worrying about it and start taking care of it.
The 04-05 had far fewer issues than 01-02.
I've seen many of them go a quarter million miles and more, with only routine fluid services.
Occasionally one doesn't make it that far... You'll have that from time to time.

Multiple drain-and-fills is the accepted way to get the majority of the fluid replaced.
ONLY 56k on it huh? Still a baby.
I'd change the trans fluid now, then change it again when it's getting its engine oil changed. Then continue changing trans fluid ......maybe with every other oil change if you really want to change it that often.
At work we recommend trans fluid drain and fill every 30,000 miles.

You'll just ruin it doing that.

[QUOTE=AP4114;4706717]I've read even with fluid changes that they still fail and some with low mileage. carcomplaints.com
I bought the car for reliability and peace of mind that it won't have a catastrophic break down! Now my odds of this happening have increased! At a cost of $3500 + And i don't like those odds!

You've already crashed the plane before you even got on board.
You are LOOKING for the worst of the worst on that site. ALL you are going to find there is the bad stuff.
Plenty of people have better experiences than that.
You have a 12 year old USED car.
It's gonna break or wear out sooner or later.
So will every other car on the road.
Does your trans have a problem right now? No.
Drive it and take care of it.
I'm surprised you didn't complain about all the other stuff that can break on the cars.

Re: Anyone having problems with 2004 auto tranny
the 7th gen (2001-2005) are known for bad/poor auto transmissions, more so in the earlier models (2001-2003) are a lot more likely to have issues, 2004-2005 they did improve somewhat

One car, one issue. Keep it all in one thread. Thanks.
Nothing lasts forever, but you aren't sitting on a ticking time bomb either.
Drive your car.
I looked at an 02 Civic with about 190,000 miles on it today..... trans shot craps.
It's been having issues for the last .....maybe 10,000 miles and back then we had told the owner it's gonna need serious attention soon.... Today was that day.

Thanks for your reply. From what I've read so far they say is to use Honda tranny fluid only! Wondering is there a better tranny fluid to use. Wondering if its the honda fluid that can't handle the heat and if the high performance synthetic ones are better.

My 2004 Ex has 100,000 miles. The transmission is working great, just routine fluid change done using Honda ATF fluid. I get 40 mpg strict highway, and around 30 mixed driving.
Recently changed control arms for bushings and ball joints, spark plugs, and timing belt with water pump. I bought the Aisin kit from RockAuto. Seems to be high quality. I did the work myself, but local dealership has a special listed for $449.95 for timing belt replacement. You pay the labor, they supply the parts.

Re: 2004 lx auto transmission 62k
these transmissions seem to be very sensitive to fluid types, its best to stick with honda OEM fluid, changing fluid type will do more harm then good IMO, even though honda OEM fluid seems to cost more then the price of gold, i feel it is well worth it

The website does not specify, but it does state You pay the labor, we pay for the belt. I would think they might charge for the water pump, but they seem purposely vague.

I'm sure that would be ONLY the timing belt.
The rest of the belts, the water pump, coolant, tensioner, valve cover gasket, etc. are additional costs to you.
They aren't losing on the coupon deal.
For that Civic, you can find the timing belt for about 22 dollars through genuine Honda dealers on the internet. About 32 retail.

Use of flush chemicals and flush machines are "strongly discouraged".
Drain and fill is stupid simple too. Easier than changing your own engine oil.
