05 Civic: Is my tranny about to fail?
2005 Civic Hybrid, just a tad under 40K miles.
I've never had any problems with the Auto Transmission.
Today as I was cleaning around the battery tray, I looked closely at the tranny housing. What I saw was not good. Over the metal surface was fine webbing, like very tiny cracks. Check out the picture and tell me what you think. Look at the center, top, and upper right. The pic is focused above the tranny fluid cooling line. Should I be concerned with this? I don't see any webbing like this on the engine block.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Looks normal to me, nothing I would worry about.
2005 with under 40k? WOW!
Have you changed the CVT trans fluid yet?

Im wondering if there is a top coating on your transmission that is just cracking. Or if its the actually transmission housing thats cracking. If its the actually transmission housing thats cracking.....thats not good.....the only thing i could think of would cause that Is maybe you or the owner before bottomed out the car and the transmission got hit. But if you bottomed it out you would of known so im taking it YOU didn't but maybe the owner before did.

Only way to really tell is if the put the ultraviolet dye in and cycle it through. If it shows up in the cracks the transmission housing is shot. other than that it just looks cosmetic. At 40K you shouldn't have any trouble unless you have gotten the vehicle from someone that thinks since it has 4 wheels it's a 4 wheel drive.

Re: 05 Civic: Is my tranny about to fail?
I asked my brother who's worked on some before; he said it's normal. Also checked some other Hondas...it seems like a pretty common occurrence. It's even on my folks' '02 Accord engine block, and they never had trouble with it.
I'm the 2nd owner, and the underside is scratch-free.
Yeah, I've changed the fluid before.
For a while there, this was causing me some concern.
