iPhone Bluetooth OBD scanner any good ?

Engine light just came on my UK 2001 1.6 SE

I'm pretty low on the knowledge side of car mechanic type stuff here

I can confirm I have tightened my petrol cap up

I'm aware that asking about such issues is frowned upon* pending ODB code collection

So, looking at my cheapest options

iPhone ODB readers any good ?

I've seen stuff like this

Looks pretty snazzy!

And I see you can buy a bluetooth dongle for a tennar.

Or would something like
this this
do more better stuff ?

* I put higher octane in the tnk the last two trips and it's very foggy.

Could there be a connection ?

Re: iPhone Bluetooth OBD scanner any good ?

I personally use Torque Pro (for Android) with a $30 Bluetooth scanner. My car never throws codes but it's pretty handy! Here are some alternatives for iPhone: http://appcrawlr.com/app/related/364

X2 on Torque for Android with a flea-bay $10 Bluetooth reader. Nice app, wish it would read ABS/SRS codes. Nice options for reading DTC and drive cycle status prior to E-testing.

There are some lower budget wired OBD tools that will retrieve/reset the codes for most vehicles. The newer units will do ABS codes as well as some SRS/Airbag systems

Re: iPhone Bluetooth OBD scanner any good ?

I choose to use the scan gauge, so it's right in the dash. Harder to do on the phone while driving. however, the phone might be better to transfer data to the computer.

the phone and the scan gauge might not give the accessibility to SRS or ABS codes that the handheld does, so it's a matter of choice.
like said, i did not go with the phone app, i have the scan auge and the handheld because they suited my needs better.
however, i have had to get one handheld that works for both my cars, and two scangauges for each of the OBDII cars.
the third one is OBDI, different animal...
each of them have advantages, disadvantages.

This one is good. As for the app, I recommend this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....motordata.obd, it's free and quite well-made, I use it instead of the one I paid for.
