2004 civic 1.7L lost one cylinder?

Ive switched out coil, and spark plug, there is spark but cylinder #2
appears dead.
Car doesn't have super amount of miles, changed oil frequently, timing belt, etc...
Any ideas would be appreciated. Could it be a bad fuel injector?
Valve? Worse? Can a clogged intake manifold (with carbon) cause 1 dead cylinder? Egr ports?
Any and all ideas greatful. 1.7L motor
Thanks
Matt

Re: 2004 civic 1.7L lost one cylinder?

How many miles?
I suppose there's a CEL on?
Got code?
Got freeze frame data?

Is the cylinder a completely dead miss, or is it only setting a code?
Can you feel when it misses? (What conditions?)

Is the cylinder missing spark fuel or compression? (I know you said it has spark)
Compression test?
Valve adjustment?

Re: 2004 civic 1.7L lost one cylinder?

Does have like 160K
didn't do a compression test yet...
definitely a complete miss from that cylinder, not intermittent.
I guess I will check that the fuel injector is working, since that shouldn't be that hard.
real strange, seems like its just a bad spark plug, was working fine one day, next this?
CRAZY???

Re: 2004 civic 1.7L lost one cylinder?

First wanted to say THANKS for answering EZONE, greatly appreciated...
one other thing, I was running it without EGR plugged in for about the last 5.000 miles due to most likely clogged intake passages.
had a p0401 code present a while, ago, switched out Oxygen sensor back 4 months ago, and ended up just unplugging egr so it would run smooth, which it has until this.
Could a complete clogged intake passage for that cylinder cause no compression?
I will get a compression test today, after checking fuel injector working or not.

Ah, ok.
Could a complete clogged intake passage for that cylinder cause no compression?
I can't picture this happening......unless maybe somehow a chunk of carbon broke off and got wedged in a valve holding it open.

I guess after you figure out what the real problem is, then you can investigate why.

Ok, dead hole.

Rodents love to eat wires, it happens overnight.

So....don't only check the injector, check that it's getting power and pulsed ground while running (verify wiring integrity and signals).

Same for the coil (I know you said it makes spark, but be sure it makes spark when connected to its own wiring harness)

In fact, someone was showing a customer a pickup truck on the lot yesterday ........ opened the hood and was greeted by a rabbit happily munching on injector wiring.

Re: 2004 civic 1.7L lost one cylinder?

well its getting near Easter right? LOL
but thanks again will check wiring.

Sooo I did take air cleaner off, and look at injectors, did the
screw driver sound test, putting end on injector other end at ear, did
NOT hear injector pulsing on dead cylinder. Geeeez could I be
spared a whole motor? I am keeping my fingers crossed its the
injector. Never took one off though so have to figure out how to maybe switch
the injectors and see if dead cylinder goes with it. Not sure otherwise how
to test injector?
Thanks Again....

Re: 2004 civic 1.7L lost one cylinder?

did
NOT hear injector pulsing on dead cylinder.
Compare to a good one first.

Not sure otherwise how
to test injector?
Since true injector failures are very rare on Hondas, I'd start with: Use a noid light to see if power and ground are found at the connector while running, the light should flash rapidly. If no flash, you're on to something big.

Ohm test, compare to a good unit (you have 3 more good ones right there)

Apply power and ground to see if it will tick (don't hard wire it, they are only supposed to be pulsed in milliseconds of time. Constantly held on can ruin it.)

Swap to a different position, see if the miss follows it

Re: 2004 civic 1.7L lost one cylinder?

Yes determined with multimeter, that injector is bad, however
I noticed at the bottom of the injector where the little ports are, the
small plastic part around the bottom was missing like half, real small
pieces of that plastic not there, assume the pieces are in the fuel
injector port, down in there, and wondering is that a problem? Can
that cause issues? THANKS!!

Re: 2004 civic 1.7L lost one cylinder?

Man, I don't have any injectors laying around here to look at.

Does it come with a new injector?
U-pull yard, grab a whole set with the rail and all?

If you look at that pick, at the very end its missing a real little piece
of plastic around it there, I guess it cracked and the pieces fell off
Im assuming in the port where I got it out from. Just wondering if
those little pieces would damage anything if it fell down the injector port?

As long as it wasn't steel, I expect it would get chewed up and spit out without incident IMO.
