Gear Shift Issues. Acceleration Issues.

Today while I was driving to work, my 2004 Honda Civic suddenly slowed down. Literally from around 70 MPH to around 40-50 MPH. Furthermore, my RPM gauge went all the way up to 4000. And now when I start it it shakes a lot.

Haven't had a tune up or oil change in awhile. What could be the issue?

Too little information to go on..... need more.....

Did the check engine light turn on?

If so, you need to read the code that is stored in your computer. Take it to any place that can read trouble codes or do it yourself with a code-reader.

Do you hear a belt flapping noise from the engine area?

Is it automatic or manual?

Sorry. It's a manual transmission car. The engine light did come on, but I've also been missing a gas cap so assumed that was why. I'll get the code read though.
Any guess would be appreciated.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

No guessing until you provide the fault code numbers.

Wait.....I'll guess:

If it did all this without you shifting gears then I'd guess the clutch is wasted

I've also been missing a gas cap
Do you have any idea how much it costs to not only figure out, but fix all the problems that can be caused by water in the gas tank? All over a $10 gas cap someone is too cheap to buy?
