Did you test for fuel?
Did you test for spark?
Do the lights dim when you try to start the car?

Did you test your battery load?
Do you hear your fuel pump clicking on when you put the key to the "on" position"?

Re: 2001 civic dx, D17A2

You can take a volt meter and make sure it's putting out around 12v.
Do your lights dims when you try to start the car?

Start with that.
Then you can pull out your fuel line and crank the car a bit to see if your getting fuel. Then you can test for spark. Pulling a spark plug is the easist way.

tried cranking it, the battery is dead so i have it charging now, for the spark do i just pull one out and crank it or do i need to touch it to a ground?

Re: 2001 civic dx, D17A2

Before you do that. Just charge the battery fully and then try it.

Re: 2001 civic dx, D17A2

YES do not check for spark holding it in your hand. That's 30K volts at least -- and if you're really unlucky, it'll find a tenth of an amp on your body and ground through it.

Best thing is to buy a tool to do this -- looks like two clips on a cable but one fits on the plug, the other on a known good ground (best on the engine, not the neg terminal on the battery). Because the D17 has coil-on-plug theres 1) no way to hold the plug on the coil and 2) there's little to no slack with the primary wires to touch the plug to a ground.

When was the fuel filter last changed?

Check back after the spark test...

the car was purchased used so god knows when it was last changed, and ive been doing some research, best ive found is the HEI ignition tester, is it good or do you know of anything better?

Yes that will work if you know how to use it

If not, here is a great article:

Best thing is to
Get some other sucker ---I mean person-- to hold the coil and plug in their hand to check for spark.

If they hit the hood and scream and cuss at you really loud, you probably have good spark.

I merged your new thread with this older one.

In the meantime, I moved it from the 8th gen, yours is NOT a 8th gen, it's a 7th gen, so STOP posting in there.
