2001 Civic LX with no Low Beam Headlights

My 2001 Civic just lost the low beams on the headlights. The fuses, relays and bulbs all check ok. I replaced the switch on the column with no luck. I know that Honda had a recall for this problem in 2005. They tell me that the repair was made at the dealer. I have been told that it could be the multiplex contoller in the underdash fuse panel, a $150 part online. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 2001 Civic LX with no Low Beam Headlights

start with the obvious....

remove both the bulbs, turn the headlights on and check the voltage at each connector with a voltmeter, it should read the same as your battery reading,

next test the ground wire in the connector....so test voltage from the battery + terminal to the ground wire in the connector, again, it should read the same as the battery voltage,

Do your high beams work?

Some scat's for you to mull over. The last two go together.

Re: 2001 Civic LX with no Low Beam Headlights

A cheap test light and a wire diagram can be your best friend, if you know how to use them.

Although the Multiplex unit is wired in with the headlight system, the Multiplex unit does not affect actual headlight operation. It could be dead to the world and the headlights should still operate normally.
(According to US wire diagrams... I did not look at Canadian versions though.)

Recheck the wire modification done for the headlight recall. I don't care who did the recall, a human did the repair. The crimps could be loose.

Inspect wiring to pin 6 (RED/WHT) in the harness to the switch you replaced.

That eliminates a lot. If that's the case, do what CraigW said because it's about the only thing it could be at this point. It has to be common to both low beam portions of the headlight circuitry and that wire looks about the only thing it could be at this point since you replaced the combination switch already.

Thanks for the help. You schematics were better than the ones I had. I'll check this when I get back home in a few days.

Re: 2001 Civic LX with no Low Beam Headlights

The old repair kits are to repair that pin. It had a short wire and attached terminal pin, and a new switch.

There was a 2nd recall recently...not sure what that was about though.

01 still gets the same old recall #04-015, nothing changed there.

The newer recalls have different parts (most only get the wire) and affect different cars:
#12-056 ; 02-03 Civic and 04-05 Pilot.
#12-023 is for 02-04 CRV and 03 Pilot.

Re: 2001 Civic LX with no Low Beam Headlights

Thanks for all of the advice. The dealer repair for the recall was to twist the wires together and wrap it with electrical tape. A short length of wire and a couple of butt splices and we are back ikn business.

Thanks again

That was absolutely NOT a properly completed recall.
Twisting wires is not acceptable IMO.
The recall provided a wire pigtail, and a nice butt connector with a pink heat-shrink cover.

If you retained any pics and proof, I would contact Honda.
Here is a copy of the recall info (USA VERSION): http://rotordesign.com/insight/Safet...ightSwitch.pdf
Look on the last page for Who to contact if you experience problems (IF you are in the USA).
You clearly have a problem if this recall was improperly completed.
