Hi all, I have a quick question about the EGR valve in my 04 Civic LX automatic.
Could an EGR valve be faulty or troublesome without the check engine light coming on?
I am getting some intermitting shuddering at low speed. Around 1800 RPM at 40 MPH to be exact.. Its almost like it’s between gears, car is an automatic and as soon as I tap the gas or let off it goes away, sort of a sweet spot I guess.
Today, I cleaned the throttle body, replaced the air filter and just replaced the spark plugs. These needed to be replaced and the car runs lot better now. The problem is still there but not as bad as it was and doesn’t happen as much.
Would cleaning the EGR valve or just replacing it help? Any opinions? Car has 110K miles.

usually its either clogged enough to throw an engine light (for insufficient flow) or its fine. did you clean the IAC valve on the throttle body when you were doing everything else? you could try cleaning the egr too, it just has two nuts holding it on. also old oxygen sensors can cause hesitation. usually they never last as long as their rated 100k miles. i had to replace mine at 80k and noticed better throttle response right away.
After being up all night reading other threads, I am going to try cleaning the EGR valve and check out the IAC..
Big expensive question... Should I replace both O2 Sensors? Or just the top one on the manifold.. I agree that the O2 sensors could be the cause. The car seems to be a dog lately; it was terrible and drinking gas till I did the plugs. It runs better now but still seems to be slow.
The car does have 110K miles, its my wife’s car so she put the cheapest fuel imaginable in it, I try to get her to put 93 in it every once in a while but she wont.. Not sure if that can cause the cat to clog faster and quicker wear of the O2 sensors. I hear Myths about that sort of thing but who knows.
are you still on the original sensors? if so then change both out asap. and yeah having an 04 means you have the expensive wideband a/f version. but still worth changing, and they last a long time.
make sure you get the right ones. for oem, www.hondaautomotiveparts.com usually has the cheapest prices. on my 01-03, i just bought the bosch sensors from the auto store, which turned out to be the same brand as the oem (NTK).
Thanks for the help. Great website. I was going to use www.rockauto.com but the one you gave me is a little clearer and easier to order from. Ever use Rock Auto?
i always use majestic. for small orders the shipping kinda sucks, so i just wait til i have around $100 worth of stuff and then put a big order. everything is lower than list price (at my local dealer its above msrp lol).
Yeah Shipping was terrible.. They are in RI and I am right next door in Mass. They charged me $24 + $5 handling.. LOL.. Still was a little cheaper than the local auto parts stores.

Thanks to Richyzfr1000 for visiting RockAuto.com! RockAuto is my family's auto parts business and we have been online since '99. I have used RockAuto a lot(!), but Richyzfr1000 is probably looking for a less biased source: RockAuto is Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited with a current "A+" rating. We are not a Honda dealer, but we do stock many replacement parts for Hondas made by well known manufacturers. For example, we have the '04 Civic IAC, EGR, and 0xygen sensors discussed in this thread made by ACDelco, Airtex, Beck/Arnley, Bosch, Delphi, Denso, and Standard Motor Products (SMP). Auto and body parts are new or remanufactured except for our OEM Honda wheels which are reconditioned. My family enjoys helping people keep their cars on the road. I hope you will visit RockAuto.com to research (and hopefully sometimes buy!) the parts available for your Hondas and other vehicles. If anyone has questions about RockAuto, feel free to email me at tom@rockauto.com

Hey Guys thanks for all the help. The car seems to run a lot better with the new sensors. No trace of any shuddering so far, well see if the wife notices anything.. I appreciate all the help.. Now I just need to get the Radio code... I dont think I ever got the code card from the dealer.
