i dont really believe in synthetics, and surely you should not be running any oil heavier than 5w30 in a civic. that could be causing issues already, because its too thick to move thru the motor properly.

do i get it at autozone????

You are perfectly safe to go back to conventional oil from full synthetic. It is a common myth that you can't. Don't overfill the oil at all. Never go over that line, there is no need to as there is so much room to play already. Overfilling the crank causes the oil to foam up and become useless. I would go with the Valvoline MaxLife oil over the Mobil 1. Why do you want to cut your oil filter apart? If you search on the forum there are sites showing you already cut open filters, I'm sure you can use one of those as an example and do it yourself, just search oil filter information and comparisons.

Re: 7th Gen. Civic - D17A1 Engine Noise. Please, please... I need help.

i would not use synthetic, not even the valvoline. some will argue with me, but look at all the old hondas with 300k+ miles and all they used is conventional oil, not even any lc additive. the lc in conventional oil makes it last 10k miles, lab test proven. now i dont recommend going that long because usually the filter gets full long before that, but if you have a well maintained engine, i dont see why you cant go at least 6 months between oil changes. heck im at 6 months now and the oil still looks brand new in the engine. the first few months using lc, you will notice the oil turning dark black very fast. this is normal as the lc is dissolving deposits and turning them into lube. its perfectly fine to keep doing the 6 month changes. after a while you will start to notice the oil rarely gets dirty anymore. im feeling lazy so ill prolly go another couple months and then change the oil again. even if the filter gets clogged, the oil will just bypass it. and having "dirty" oil wont really hurt anything cause the lc keeps everything suspended. people for the most part are very wasteful with their oil. i bet 80% or more of all cars getting oil changes are throwing away perfectly good oil. even conventional can easily go 5k without lc. and 10k with the lc. there is no reason to change it every 3k unless you have a turbo and beat the car everyday. thats just a wasteful mentality the retarded quik lube places started because business was slow, and the oil companies support so they can sell more oil. if youre paying $5 a qt of oil, you better get every last penny out of it. my oil changes i do myself usually cost $30, but at least i only do it 2x a year.

You really like that lubecontrol stuff eh? I might have to try it. I've just been maintaining my car well so I figured I did not need anything further but I don't know how many times I've seen you writing about it.

Re: 7th Gen. Civic - D17A1 Engine Noise. Please, please... I need help.

lol yeah its the only additive i recommend. cause it works and its been around for 40+ yrs. lab tests and all, fleets of trucks use it to lower emissions and fuel costs. you can use it everyday without damaging anything. and its the only way i was able to increase my highway mpg above 38 (my highest was 42, average of 40 now). these d17s need all the help they can get.

Re: 7th Gen. Civic - D17A1 Engine Noise. Please, please... I need help.

If money is not an issue and even if it is, in my opinion there is no comparison between a full synthetic and a dino oil, even with LC or any other addiditive. When you compare a group III versus a group IV base stock, the need for viscosity improvers versus no need for vi's, as well as a much lower pore point and reduced deposits and varnish, synthetic oil outperforms dino oil. If you really care to learn about oil and additives, go to bobistheoilguy.com and you will find an answer to almost any question by people who truely understand oil.

Almost no cars die from mechanical failures due to oil, unless grossly abused ( no oil changes or run out of oil). Either dino or syn will allow your engine to outlast the rest of the car.

I have three cars, my 2004 Camry and a 2001 Civic and a 2000 Integra that my 2 son's drive. The Camry has 85,000 miles using German Castrol 0W-30, the Civic has 105,000 and was purchased with 80,000, the Integra has 130,000 and was purchased with 115,000 miles. My guess is both were on dino oil. The Integra and Civic both had an AutoRX clean and rinse with dino. The Integra oil looks about how you would expect, dirty at 3000 miles when it is changed. The Civic has it's first oil change with Mobil 1 5w-30 and I will let it go 7000 to 7500 miles. My Camry gets the oil changed at 7500 since that is twice a year. I mention this because I am not sold on any one solution, I adjust based on what I believe will work best. The Integra is on 5W-30 dino because at the mileage there is a potentional for hardened seals and oil leakage if changed to syn. The Civic is on syn because my son is away at school and I don't want him to have to deal with changing the oil and I am interested in seeing how well syn will clean an engine that has the usual deposits from dino oil. The Camry engine is incredible! Before I change the oil at 7500 miles (it could go much longer but I was conservative because it was under warranty and now I just stay with the routine) I check the oil with a white paper napkin. The oil with 7500 miles on it is the color of honey, if I were to show it to any mechanic he would think it had just been pored in. Every surface of the engine is silver there is absolutely no varnish, discoloration or dirt after 85,000 miles. I don't worry about the filter because the ones I cut open have no dirt in them. At 100,000 I may change to dino just for curiousity.
