So they said I have a transmission bearing problem.

Hey guys I just got an 01 Civic Si/Ex (Canada) a couple months ago. Anyways my tranny just inst shifting really smooth lately. So I took it to a tranny shop I figured of all people to know what would be going on with the car they would know. Anyways I wasnt sure if the noise was normal or not but when the engine is going to about 2000-3500 rpm there is a really strange noise which is hard to describe. Anyways the guy told me that it was my transmission bearing, but im wondering if its related to the other problems I have been having.

What I am experiencing is mostly a problem when im shifting. Its always a very clunky feeling every time I shift. Often you can even feel it click which isn't normal. Other problems which I have had. Is that a couple times now the shifter has actually fallen out of 2nd gear back into neutral. I'm not sure whats up with that. Also my gas mileage has gone down aswell. I was getting about 650km per tank but now its down to about 500-530. Anyways it still works and it still drives. But the transmission just isn't very smooth and its very irritating. People told me they think it might be a synchro or a detent problem. I thought it was a sychro problem for sure.

Could be syncros, could be the input shaft bearing, or could be both. The input shaft bearing has a really crappy design in our civics. I think its bearings are held together by plastic which over time will crack.

So do i assume its both and get the tranny replaced? Or do I just go the cheap way and replace the bearings?

If you can find a cheap trans on the forums. It'll be cheaper to replace than tear it apart. If you do it yourself, it'll be even cheaper.

Re: So they said I have a transmission bearing problem.

I have a connection that can get me a new 05 civic tranny at cost from Honda which is $650. Then he will charge me $40 an hour labour to install it. The book says about 4 hours. But he is a genious with Honda's so I was thinking probably 2-3 hours.
