Timing Belt / Water Pump - Odds & Ends?

Hey all... I love this forum.

So after a few searches I found the timing belt DIY. However, I am going to do my water pump + coolant flush along with it, as well as the ac/ps/alt belts.

Question is: What miscellaneous / incidental parts (Other than the obvious timing belt, belt tensioner, water pump+ o-ring) should I get from majestic to do the job RIGHT so I won't have to mess with it more than once?

Specifically, I know I need a timing belt, belt tensioner, water pump assy (including the o-ring), some honda coolant, new ac/alt/ps belts and a valve cover gasket. However, in everyone's experience, should I go ahead and replace the oil seals on the crank and camshafts? Am I going to want a new crank pulley at $51 and change because of the jesus nut everyone complains is impossible to get off? What about the different makes of gaskets that spec out to the same part #'s on majestic? are there some that work better than others? Any other parts that should be done to make certain the job is done right?

Any inputs are welcomed. I'm going to take pictures of this process and add to the already good timing belt DIY so it includes the water pump and belt replacements.

If you have an impact gun then you should be good to go without buying the crank pulley/nut. How much are you paying at majestic? The stuff was pretty cheap at the dealer (11 bucks for the timing belt and something like 90 bucks for the pump) but I dont remember if that was before the discount. I'm glad your no newb and know to change the water pump while your down there. Good luck with the task and here is some preemptive rep for doing it yourself.

Thanks. Much obliged for the rep.

Majestic has the water pump at $54 and change. I live in Yorba Linda / Anaheim hills so the dealers are out to get you because nobody here does their own work. I busted a valve cover bolt a while back and it was like $13 bucks for a $3.00 list part. bastards.

Do you think I should go ahead and do the oil seals while I'm in there? not sure if it makes the job harder as I think to do them I need to remove the harmonic balancer which I'll need to rent a puller for at autozone. I know I'll need the crank holder tool because I don't have an impact that I'm confident will take out the crank bolt. The video on http://www.denlorstools.com/home/dt1...pful_tips.html seems to show it is possible to do the bolt without an impact.

That tool is what the book said to use. Thats a pretty cool site btw.

As for the oil seals (I am no expert and going from memory) I dont think thats required for the timing belt maintainence period. I haven't actually heard of anybody changing them with the timing belt/water pump but change them if you want to.

Hopefully somebody more prominent will hit this thread up tomorrow(not during the wee hours of the morning) and give you some more input.

Re: Timing Belt / Water Pump - Odds & Ends?

Majestic honda is awesome. I work at a honda dealership & they beat my employee rates. They work out to be about even after shipping but still they're awesome. Our parts dept. gets parts from them sometimes when we're out.

I do recommend doing the oil seals behind the timing belt while you're in there. Helps prevents oil leaks in the future, those oil leaks can ruin a new timing belt by soaking it in oil.......The older accords are bad about leaking there but our civic's do pretty good. Bottom line is they are cheap insurance, ya know what I mean?

You got it right on the tensioner & pump. I always recommend those aswell. Cheap insurance.

Good luck!

Re: Timing Belt / Water Pump - Odds & Ends?

i recommend a new crank pulley, since the rubber damper is prolly worn away inside.
