so my friend took her 98 civic dx to the dealership cause she got a cel. they pulled the code and it was P0141 which is "O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)"
they said both of her o2 sensors need to be replaced, and it will cost a little over 500 dollars. ($210 and $185 for the 2 sensors, plus 2 hours of labor.) it sounds rediculous to me, but 2 questions come up.
do the o2 sensors even need to be replaced?
should it cost 500 bucks?
any help would be good, cause i know nothing about civics.
thanks a lot

sorry i'm a dumbass and posted this in the wrong generation thingy. the right one is in the right place now and i cant figure out how to delete this damn thing. so if an admin wants to, go for it.
Yes, they need to be replaced approx. every 50k miles, it all depends on how you drive it. Yes, they are rediculously expensive, and yes, it will cost about $500. I have to replace mine and its going to be almost $500 just for the sensors....if you want to save some money...do it yourself. Its really easy.

if i were to replace the sensors myself...
are they easily accessible?
do i have to F* with the wiring (any splicing or whatever)?
and do i need to replace both of them even though the code (from my understanding) is only describing a problem in one of the sensors?
Well, since its only reading 1 code, then its only one sensor. SO, you need to get that sensor, unscrew the bad one from your exhaust pipe (location will depend which one it is), unplug it, screw in the new one, plug it back in and your done. Its not too bad.
so then the shop is just being a slut when they say that it will take 2 hrs, and they need to replace both o2's? thats what i was originally thinking on this one.
Well, heres what to do. Head to Auto Zone, grab their code reader, and see what codes are coming up. If both 02 sensors are bad, it will read AT LEAST 2 codes. When I did my motor swap, I had the wrong sensors in (01-03 dont work in 04-05) and it read 4 codes. Swapped them out, and its only reading 2 codes because one of the sensors is bad. NOW, on the 98, Im not exactly sure, but if it says bank 1 sensor 2, Im thinking its the secondary sensor which is the one right after the cat. Even if the shop had to replace both, it doesnt take 2 hours, unfortunately, they will charge you flat rate hours, which 2 hours is about normal for that.
alrighty. thanks a lot for your help. at least i now have an idea of some things to check out on her car. and then when i'm done figuring out stuff on her car i can go back to driving my WRX
looks like the pre-cat sensor (should be in the exh manifold) is reasonable for just under $100. the pre cat is the one one that really does anything, adjusts the a/f ratio. the post cat just checks the condition of the cat for emissions purposes, which should be a p0420 i belive.

stealerships get their name for a reason. you can buy a plug and play HO2 for around 80 or so depending. you can also buy universal sensors and splice them yourself to save a few. hell you only really need the front one, the second one is just an emmissions monitoring device.
